Fans admit they expected an entertaining thriller… Instead, they found a pulse-pounding experience that stayed with them long after the credits rolled. The biggest shock? After watching it, many viewers say they’ll never look at a routine drive the same way again.

Fans have warned others they won’t look at their travels on the road in the same way.

A ‘nail-biting’ Netflix revenge thriller is now streaming on the platform, and viewers have said it could change how you drive after watching it. The 2001 film Joy Ride was only just recently made available as part of its extensive library, but it has already made its mark on the charts.

At the time of writing, the film is the fifth-most-watched title among UK subscribers. It seems that users are enjoying rediscovering the movie more than 20 years after its initial release.

Joy Ride was co-written by now-acclaimed filmmaker J.J. Abrams before he went on to create TV shows like Lost and Fringe, as well as to helm movies including 2009’s Star Trek and two of the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

According to its synopsis, the film is set during summer break and follows college freshman Lewis Thomas, who has decided to embark on a cross-country road trip to pick up the girl of his dreams, Venna. But Lewis’ romantic hopes hit a detour when he stops on the way to rescue his older brother.

Fuller goads him into playing a practical joke on a lonely trucker, over a CB radio. Now, that trucker, an unseen and terrifying force known only by his CB handle, Rusty Nail, wants the last laugh and revenge.

The cast includes late Fast and Furious star Paul Walker, alongside White Lotus actor Steve Zahn. Ted Levine, who played serial killer Buffalo Bill in Oscar-winning The Silence of the Lambs, lends his voice to the villainous Rusty Nail.

While it may not have been an overwhelming hit with critics at the time of its original release, fans still recommend it all these years later. They have called it “the most effective revenge thriller ever” and “one of the scariest movies of the 2000s”.

One person even suggested that it will change the way you drive in the future. They warned: “After watching this high-octane, rare shining example of 2000’s era horror gem, I dare you to so much as pass a truck on the right ever again!”

Although some suggest it could inspire your own travels. They commented: “A masterpiece. Right as you take a deep breath and the adrenaline slows, here we go again. Never cared for JJ Abrams until seeing his name on the credits. This movie makes you want to drive cross-country, and it never gets old.”

Others also reserved high praise for the film, such as a fan who admitted, “It scared me half to death. It was a good movie with an original plot, and the actors did well in the movie. I loved the way they acted, and I just loved this movie.”

Another added, ” I thought this was one of the most suspenseful thrillers I have seen in my entire life. It was such a brilliant idea. I kept wondering what Rusty Nail would do next! 10/10.”
