Netflix’s anticipated reboot of Little House on the Prairie has finally arrived, and viewers have flooded social media with their verdicts on the adaptation.

Drawing inspiration from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved, semi-autobiographical book series, which was first adapted for screens in 1974, the eight-parter follows the Ingalls family as they navigate the trials and tribulations of building a new life on the 19th-century Western frontier.

What is Little House on the Prairie about?

Based on the third book in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s series, the drama follows the Ingalls family as they settle outside the small but quickly developing town of Independence.

The family of four faces the often harsh conditions of 19th-century prairie life, including wolves and fever.

What are viewers saying about the show?

It’s safe to say that the show has gone down well with viewers, with some binge-watching all eight episodes in one day.

Taking to social media, one person wrote: “#LittleHouseOnThePrairie is AMAZING! I’ve almost binged it all. 2 more episodes to go! Love it,” while another added: “Grew up watching old show. Currently watching this one and absolutely loving it.”

Comparing the series to the original novels, a third fan penned: “Just started watching the new #LittleHouseOnThePrairie and I’m loving it and that it’s really trying to faithfully follow the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.”

What have critics said about the show?

Critical reception has been mixed. The Guardian handed out three stars, describing the show as “a cosy world full of faith, hope and the American way,” while Variety hailed it as a “charming reimagining,” adding: “The show is slightly slow at the start, the childlike whimsy and robust themes are as resounding today as they were 150 years ago.”

Meanwhile, The Telegraph gave just two stars to the “too sanitised and Instagram-friendly” series, while The Times also described it as “sanitised” in its three-star review, adding that it “looks amazing but feels confused and hamstrung.”
