A shocking twist closed out the penultimate episode of Grantchester, one that leaves one of the main characters’ lives hanging in the balance ahead of the August 2 series finale. A murder in town was connected to a robbery at CeCe’s Boutique, run by Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth) and Mrs. C (Tessa Peake-Jones), forcing the Grantchester gang to get involved in the rescue mission. Warning: Grantchester Season 11 Episode 7 spoilers ahead.

The episode began with Alphy (Rishi Nair) addressing his crisis of faith caused by his rocky relationship with his biological mother, Mira (Nimmi Harasgama). A deep conversation assured Alphy that Mira wants him in her life, and that his life as a Vicar wasn’t a mistake. Mira was comforted by Alphy’s found family in Grantchester, and Alphy had a moment of healing.

Back at the precinct, Geordie (Robson Green) packed up his office for what was meant to be one of his final days working cases; he previously accepted a promotion and will now be running the show. But when the murder and robbery mystery put Cathy in grave danger, Geordie put everything aside.

A small gang of men hatched a scheme to steal money from CeCe’s Boutique, money owed to them by CeCe’s accountant Mr. Switch (Daniel Lapaine). All of the boutique’s financial success really came from this borrowed cash, and the men, JP (Ben Bailey Smith) and Dex (Sonny Ashbourne Serkis), demanded a return.

JP didn’t want to hurt any of the shop’s hostages, but Dex cared less about collateral damage, so did a shop customer, Tracey (Sai Bennett), who appeared to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. But she was actually the murdered robber’s killer. She was at the shop to get the money she was promised by her former lover.

Mrs. C was safely released, and Alphy took her place to figure out the murder mystery and protect Cathy and Switch, but Tracey commandeered the hostage situation. And then Dex took the gun.

When he tried to run away, Geordie blocked his path and tried to appeal to his better nature. Dex shot Geordie right in the stomach, and the episode ended with him bleeding out as Cathy and Alphy tried to keep him conscious while they waited for emergency assistance. Will Geordie die in the Grantchester series finale?

The penultimate episode showed all of the characters what is really important to them. Geordie and Cathy’s marriage has been on the rocks all season, and the fear from the hostage situation made them realize they couldn’t lose each other. Hopefully, they won’t!
