The Men I Thought Were My Husband’s Investigators Were Never Working for Him at All

Part 2: The Men I Thought Were My Husband’s Investigators Were Never Working for Him at All

When I opened my eyes, the first thing I heard was a steady beeping.

Hospital monitors.

The second thing I felt was someone holding my hand.

Marcus.

He looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot, and his beard hadn’t been trimmed in weeks.

The moment he realized I was awake, tears filled his eyes.

“Don’t move,” he whispered.

“The doctors say the baby’s okay.”

I instinctively reached for my stomach.

A tiny kick answered.

I burst into tears.

For the first time in eight months…

I cried because of relief.

Marcus squeezed my hand carefully.

“I need you to tell me everything.”

I stared at the ceiling.

“If you’re lying…”

“…please don’t.”

“I’m too tired to survive another lie.”

“I’m not lying.”

“I swear on our daughter.”

His voice broke.

“I never stopped looking for you.”

Something inside me wanted to believe him.

Another part remembered eight months of fear.

So I told him everything.

The phone call.

The warning.

The message.

Three months later…

The knock on my apartment door.

Two men wearing suits.

One carried a folder with Marcus’s company logo.

The other introduced himself as a private investigator.

“We found you.”

My heart had stopped.

“Is Marcus here?”

“No.”

“He asked us to deliver a message.”

“What message?”

The older man looked almost sympathetic.

“He has another family now.”

“He doesn’t want the child.”

“He’ll stop searching if you stay away.”

Then he handed me an envelope.

Inside was a cashier’s check for fifty thousand dollars.

No letter.

No signature.

Only one sentence typed across a sheet of paper.

Disappear permanently.

I looked back at Marcus.

“I burned the check.”

“I thought it was blood money.”

He covered his face with both hands.

“Oh God…”

“I never sent anyone.”

“I never authorized any payment.”

“I’ve never even seen that check.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

After a few moments, he found an old photograph.

It showed the investigators he had actually hired during the first month after I disappeared.

Neither man looked familiar.

“These are mine.”

“The men you described…”

“…aren’t them.”

The room suddenly felt colder.

Marcus stood.

“I’m calling Detective Ramirez.”

Within an hour, a detective arrived.

She listened without interrupting.

Then she asked one question.

“Did either man ever give you a business card?”

I nodded.

“I kept it.”

The detective’s eyes widened.

“You still have it?”

“It was inside the Bible my grandmother gave me.”

Marcus looked confused.

“You kept it?”

“I wanted to remember the day I stopped believing in you.”

The detective quietly asked Marcus for the card.

He drove to the hotel where I had been living.

Two hours later, he returned carrying my worn Bible.

The card was still tucked inside.

Detective Ramirez examined it for less than ten seconds.

Then she looked at both of us.

“This company doesn’t exist.”

Silence.

“The license number printed here belongs to a security firm that closed four years ago.”

Marcus slowly sat down.

“If they weren’t working for me…”

“…who hired them?”

The detective didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she asked another question.

“Who benefited most from your wife disappearing?”

Marcus frowned.

“No one.”

Then his expression changed.

He stared into space.

“My cousin.”

I looked at him.

“Ethan?”

Marcus nodded slowly.

“My vice president.”

“He became acting CEO while I searched for you.”

“He controlled every major contract.”

“He kept telling me to stop looking.”

“He said I needed to move on.”

The detective quietly wrote his name.

“Did he recommend the investigation company?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“He said they were the best.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

Ethan had never expected Marcus to find me by accident.

He had only needed me gone long enough to take control of the company.

The affair.

The fake investigators.

The missing wife.

Every lie had served one purpose.

To separate us.

Three weeks later, police arrested Ethan and two former security contractors.

Phone records showed dozens of calls between them.

Financial records revealed nearly two hundred thousand dollars had been transferred through shell companies to stage my disappearance.

There had never been another woman.

There had never been another baby.

The messages had been fabricated using stolen photographs and fake accounts.

Even the bank transfers I had seen had been digitally altered before being shown to me.

The detective later explained that the goal had never been murder.

It was isolation.

If I disappeared voluntarily, Ethan could gradually convince Marcus I had abandoned him.

And while Marcus searched the country for me…

Ethan quietly emptied the company.

Months later, after the criminal case was over, Marcus and I returned to the luxury hotel where he had found me.

Not because we wanted to remember the pain.

Because we wanted to replace it.

We stood in front of the same elevator.

Marcus took my hand.

“I almost lost both of you.”

I smiled through tears.

“But you didn’t.”

Behind us, our baby girl laughed from her stroller.

For the first time in nearly a year…

The future no longer felt like something we had to run from.

It finally felt like home.
