Think you have seen every nightmare Netflix can throw at you? Think again. This chilling new thriller is already creeping onto must-watch lists — and if you skip it, you may miss the next dark obsession everyone is talking about.

There’s nothing quite like a nail-biting thriller that keeps you pinned to your sofa for half a day. The best ones pull you in with a fast-moving, high-stakes narrative, relentless tension and a rollercoaster of suspense that ultimately reaches a satisfying climax.

Netflix has a great track record when it comes to delivering these pulse-pounding thrillers. From The Beast in Me to Black Doves and Dept. Q (which was my favourite show of last year), the streaming giant really has upped its game in the last couple of years – and it looks like another corker is about to hit our screens.

Josh Hartnett stars as Calvin in Below

Josh Hartnett, famed for his roles in Pearl Harbor, Penny Dreadful and Trap, leads the cast of Below, a new six-part thriller from Jesse McKeown (The Sinner, The Umbrella Academy).

The actor plays Calvin Penney, a Newfoundland fisherman and single father of three with a tragic past. When a violent sea creature begins terrorising his hometown, it’s up to Calvin to hold his tight-knit community together.

What is Below about?

The series follows Calvin Penney, a “big‑hearted but stubborn fisherman” who is still haunted by his father’s mysterious death from decades ago.

When his small village comes under attack by a violent creature, locals “succumb to mayhem” and his son Wade starts exhibiting “terrifying new symptoms,” Calvin joins forces with marine biologist Fonda to uncover the truth.

The synopsis continues: “Determined to keep his son Wade (Charlie Heaton) and the rest of his family safe, he teams up with a visiting marine researcher (Mackenzie Davis) to confront the creature and reveal the island’s buried secrets before it’s too late. Blending local myth, thrilling suspense, and heartfelt humor, this twisty six-part limited series dives into themes of family, community, and change — both terrifying and inevitable.”

Who stars in Below?

Josh Hartnett leads a star-studded cast. He’s joined by Mackenzie Davis (Speak No Evil) as Fonda Howander, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Wade Penney, Willow Kean (Away from Everywhere) as Ruth Penney, Ruby Stokes (Lockwood & Co) as Mary Penney, Rohan Campbell (The Monkey) as Jay Penney and Kaleb Horn (Chucky) as Noah.
