MUST-WATCH! Nicola Walker’s “GENIUS” Netflix Crime Drama Has Midsomer Murders Fans Wondering How They Ever Missed It. Nicola Walker leads Annika as an unconventional detective investigating disturbing deaths across Scotland’s waterways, combining dark mysteries with sharp, unexpectedly funny moments. The series’ biggest twist comes from Annika speaking directly to viewers, breaking the fourth wall and turning the investigation into a completely different kind of crime drama. Praised as “superb,” “refreshing” and brilliantly acted,” the show became a record-breaking hit before ending after just two seasons. The real crime may be that there were only two seasons—because once Annika starts talking to you, six episodes are never going to feel like enough

The black comedy crime drama, following a homicide detective, left fans begging for a third season.

Fans of gripping detective dramas have another acclaimed series to add to their Netflix watchlist, with one of Nicola Walker’s standout performances now available to stream. Originally premiering in 2021 and running for two seasons, the Scottish crime drama follows DI Annika Strandhed, an unconventional detective tasked with leading Glasgow’s newly established Marine Homicide Unit as the team investigates disturbing deaths connected to Scotland’s waterways.

In a refreshing change for the crime drama, Annika regularly broke the fourth wall to talk to viewers directly about aspects of the cases and personal reflections. Annika, the series in question, broke records to become Alibi’s most-watched drama for at least seven years.

Fans took to IMDb reviews to share their thoughts on the series, with one praising the “genius format”.

They added: “I love that Annika breaks the 4th wall. You feel as though you are a participant in the script. I really enjoy the analogies that accompany each episode.

“I’m being entertained and learning something at the same time. The scenery is breathtaking. I hope there are many more seasons to come!”

Sadly, it was reported back in August 2025 that there were no current plans for a third season.

One fan hoped the series had gone further than huge shows like Midsomer Murders, sharing: “This series is the best acted I’ve seen yet.

“The way Annika shares with the viewer is genius on the part of whoever came up with it. Endearing and well written.

“I hope it lasts longer than Murdoch Mysteries and Midsomer Murders. Excellent with 10+ stars.”

Another fan called it “superb”, sharing: “Found this witty and engaging – and a refreshing take on a detective drama. Love the unique aspect of chats to camera and the natural kind of humour between characters.”

The original radio series, Annika Stranded, was set in Oslo, but the TV adaptation relocates the action to Glasgow, while retaining some Norwegian themes.

Filming took place in Glasgow, on the River Clyde, as well as in towns in Argyll. Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock served as the homicide unit’s base, and Annika’s home was on the banks of Loch Lomond.

Silvie Furneaux starred as Morgan, Annika’s teenage daughter, with Paul McGann as Jake Strathearn, a child therapist and Annika’s partner.
