A harrowing w.a.r film now on Netflix brings an extraordinary true story to the screen, following a celebrated figure whose survival suddenly depended on disappearing from the enemy hunting him.

Albert Einstein’s scientific achievements transformed our understanding of the world, but one Netflix film turns its attention to a lesser-known and deeply unsettling chapter of his life: his flight from Nazi Germany and the complicated connection between his work and the development of the atomic bomb.

Released in 2024, Einstein and the Bomb proved popular with Netflix audiences, becoming the platform’s fourth most-watched English-language film at the time.

Blending dramatization with historical material, the film takes viewers back to 1932, when Einstein fled Germany as the threat posed by the Nazis intensified.

The Einstein Story That Often Goes Untold

Einstein was already celebrated as one of the most important theoretical physicists of his generation. He pioneered the theory of relativity and made groundbreaking contributions to quantum theory.

His famous equation explaining mass-energy equivalence would also become indirectly connected to the scientific foundations behind the atomic bomb.

That connection gives Einstein and the Bomb much of its emotional weight. Rather than presenting only the celebrated scientist familiar from history books, the film explores the man behind the discoveries and the extraordinary political circumstances surrounding him.

The production uses Einstein’s own words, drawing from his letters, speeches and interviews to construct its narrative.

Alongside his scientific work, the film follows his escape from the Nazi regime and examines a period of his life that remains less familiar to many audiences.

Einstein’s Little-Known Time in Norfolk

One of the film’s central chapters focuses on Einstein’s time in Norfolk, England.

While attempting to remain safe from potential assassins, the scientist stayed in a modest wooden cabin at Roughton camp.

The film explores the people who helped protect him during this precarious period and the unusual circumstances in which one of the world’s most recognizable intellectual figures found himself living in relative seclusion.

Elements of these scenes draw inspiration from Stuart McLaren’s non-fiction book Saving Einstein: When Norfolk Hid a Genius, which documents the real people involved in helping Einstein while he was hiding in Norfolk.

For some viewers, these details proved among the film’s biggest surprises.

One detailed review praised the production for revealing aspects of Einstein’s life the viewer had never encountered before, including his love of playing the fiddle, his dislike of interviews and the remarkable fact that such an influential figure once found himself hiding in a small house in the British countryside.

The viewer described the film as highly informative, particularly for those interested in Einstein’s biography and the years in which he was attempting to escape the threat posed by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime.

Aidan McArdle Takes On Einstein

The docudrama brings together dramatized performances and real historical footage.

Aidan McArdle portrays Einstein, while Andrew Havill plays Commander Locker-Lampson. Rachel Barry appears as Margery Howard, with Helena Westerman taking on the role of Barbara Goodhall.

The combination of reconstructed scenes and archival material allows the production to explore both Einstein’s personal experience and the larger historical events unfolding around him.

That approach has inevitably drawn comparisons with another major film examining the origins of nuclear weapons.

Viewers Draw Comparisons With Oppenheimer

Some audiences have connected Einstein and the Bomb with 2023’s Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, which explored the development of the first nuclear weapons during World War II.

One viewer suggested the Netflix release was “clearly meant to piggyback on the success of Oppenheimer.”

While Einstein and the Bomb is considerably shorter and smaller in scale, its subject matter provides obvious crossover appeal for audiences interested in the scientific and human stories behind the atomic bomb.

Another reviewer described the Netflix production as a useful companion to Oppenheimer.

“This new docudrama on Netflix is a good complement to the movie,” the viewer wrote, noting that its roughly 1-hour-and-15-minute runtime allows it to focus more specifically on Einstein and his place in the history surrounding the bomb’s creation.

The review acknowledged that such a short production could not provide a complete account, but praised the film for exploring Einstein’s conflicted feelings about what his scientific work had indirectly helped make possible.

A Different Perspective on a World-Famous Scientist

Rather than attempting to cover every aspect of Einstein’s life, Einstein and the Bomb concentrates on a turbulent historical period in which scientific discovery, political persecution and the approaching world war became intertwined.

Its use of Einstein’s own words, combined with dramatized scenes and historical footage, provides a glimpse into both his escape from Nazi Germany and his complicated place in the story of nuclear weapons.

For viewers fascinated by World War II, Oppenheimer or the lesser-known personal histories behind some of the 20th century’s most consequential events, the film offers another perspective on a scientist whose influence extended far beyond the equations for which he became famous.

Einstein and the Bomb is available to stream exclusively on Netflix.
