Remembering Hayden Panettiere: Actress and Nashville Star Dies at 36

Hayden Panettiere, the actress and singer best known for Heroes, Nashville, and Remember the Titans, has died at the age of 36. She was found unresponsive at a home in South Carolina on Sunday, with authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

Her father shared the news in a statement to ABC News:

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen. We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.”

According to TMZ, a friend found Panettiere inside a South Carolina home on Sunday afternoon. Emergency Medical Service workers responded to a report involving a person in “cardiac arrest” and an “unresponsive female.” Attempts were made to resuscitate her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police do not suspect foul play, although the circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation.

A Career Spanning Film, Television, and Music

Panettiere built a career that extended well beyond her most recognizable roles. One of her earliest parts came as the voice of Princess Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life. She later appeared as Gennifer “Gen” Harwood in Ice Princess and played Sheryl Yoast, the football-obsessed coach’s daughter, in the beloved film Remember the Titans.

Her other credits included Raising Helen, I Love You, Beth Cooper, Guiding Light, Ally McBeal, and a Bring It On sequel, among many others.

Her major breakthrough came in 2006 when she joined the cast of Heroes, a series that became a major cultural phenomenon. She also appeared as Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise.

For many country music fans, though, Panettiere will forever be associated with Juliette Barnes, the fiery, complicated, and immensely talented country star she portrayed on Nashville.

Her Legacy on Nashville

Nashville ran from 2012 to 2018 and gave Panettiere an opportunity to showcase both her acting and singing abilities. Her time on the series produced several country music hits, while she had also released pop music before joining the show.

One of the most important relationships in the series was between Panettiere’s Juliette Barnes and Connie Britton’s Rayna Jaymes, an established country superstar. Their characters began as fierce rivals before developing mutual respect and a deep professional bond.

Away from the cameras, Panettiere and Britton developed a close relationship of their own.

Following Panettiere’s death, Britton shared an emotional tribute to her former co-star, describing her as “bursting with brilliance” and saying she had “no words” for the heartbreak of losing her.

“This was Hayden. Bursting with brilliance, shining so bright. I have no words for this sad song. Just heartbreak. I love you girl. Sleep easy now.”

Panettiere also reflected on their early days working together in her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. She wrote that she was “deeply uncomfortable” when her character became particularly popular during the show’s early years.

She recalled making a deliberate effort to show Britton that she respected her. At one point, she intentionally reached for the microphone underneath Britton’s hand as a way of showing that she “came in peace.”

Their real-life relationship appears to have been far removed from the rivalry their characters initially shared. Over the years, they developed genuine affection and a close professional friendship that extended beyond their work on the series.

Remembering Hayden Panettiere

Panettiere was also open about many of the personal struggles she faced away from her career. Her willingness to speak publicly about those experiences became an important part of how many people remember her.

Throughout Nashville, she and Britton performed together on numerous occasions, including the fan-favorite song “He Ain’t Gonna Change” and “Wrong Song.”

Her death leaves behind a body of work that spans film, television, and music, as well as a lasting connection with the many fans who followed her career from her earliest roles through her years as Juliette Barnes.

The loss is especially heartbreaking for her family and daughter, who are now facing an unimaginable loss at just 36 years old.

They performed together throughout the show, including the fan-favorite song “He Ain’t Gonna Change”:
