A seemingly straightforward calculator puzzle caused unexpected carnage on The 1% Club, knocking 12 contestants out in a single round and helping send the prize pot soaring to £80,000.

But while the players inside the studio struggled under the 30-second pressure, viewers watching Lee Mack’s ITV quiz from home had a very different reaction. Many claimed they spotted the answer almost immediately, with some questioning how the puzzle could possibly have been classified as a 30% question.

One fan even described it as “suspiciously easy.”

A calculator puzzle catches out 12 players

Unlike traditional quiz shows, The 1% Club is not primarily about general knowledge. The programme starts with 100 contestants and tests their logic, reasoning and common sense through a series of increasingly challenging puzzles.

Those who survive can eventually attempt the 1% question and compete for the jackpot.

During Saturday night’s episode, the trouble arrived at the 30% stage.

Lee showed the remaining contestants an image of a standard calculator and asked:

“What’s the largest four-digit number you can type using just the number keys on the bottom two rows of this calculator without using the same number key twice?”

The contestants had just 30 seconds to study the keypad and lock in their answers.

It looked simple enough — but the results told a different story.

When the answers were counted, 12 players had got it wrong and were immediately eliminated.

The answer was 3210

The solution was 3210.

Looking at the bottom two rows of the calculator shown, players needed to identify the available number keys and then arrange four different digits to create the largest possible four-digit number.

For plenty of viewers playing along at home, the answer appeared surprisingly obvious.

Social media quickly filled with disbelief over the number of contestants who had been caught out.

One viewer asked: “How did 12 go out???? It’s 3210.”

Another was equally surprised by the result, writing: “Wt*….12 out???”

Others began questioning the difficulty rating itself.

“3210 …Is it easier this week?” one viewer wrote, while another asked: “3210. How is this a 30% question?”

Perhaps the most telling reaction came from another fan, who declared: “The calculator question seems suspiciously easy.”

£80,000 now in the prize pot

The mass elimination had a significant impact on the game.

Under The 1% Club format, eliminated contestants contribute to the growing prize fund, meaning the dramatic round helped push the jackpot up to a hefty £80,000.

That left the survivors with an increasingly valuable prize to chase — but also plenty of tougher puzzles still standing between them and the money.

The episode offered another reminder of what makes The 1% Club unpredictable: a question that looks effortless from the sofa can become something very different when contestants have only 30 seconds, a studio full of people around them and thousands of pounds potentially riding on a single answer.
