Who Was the Unabomber? Netflix’s New Drama Traces Ted Kaczynski’s Path From Harvard Prodigy to Infamous Bomber

Netflix has released the trailer for UNABOMBER, a new drama inspired by one of the most notorious criminal cases in modern American history. The film follows Ted Kaczynski from his early years as a gifted Harvard student to his transformation into the man known as the Unabomber.

The trailer begins with a deadly mail-bomb attack in 1994 before shifting back in time to examine Kaczynski’s years at Harvard and the experiences that shaped his increasingly isolated life. Jacob Tremblay plays the young Kaczynski, while Russell Crowe portrays Harvard psychologist Henry Murray and Shailene Woodley plays FBI agent Joanne Miller.

Who Was Ted Kaczynski?

Ted Kaczynski was a mathematics prodigy who entered Harvard University at only 16. Despite his exceptional academic abilities, he had difficulty connecting socially and became increasingly withdrawn.

His time at Harvard is central to UNABOMBER. During his studies, Kaczynski became involved in controversial psychological experiments conducted by psychologist Henry Murray.

The film explores Kaczynski’s relationship with Murray and examines how his experiences during those years affected his struggles with identity, isolation and his place in society.

The trailer offers a glimpse into their complicated dynamic. Murray tells the young Kaczynski, “There’s something special about you. When the battle starts, keep up the fight.”

The story then moves toward the much darker chapter that followed Kaczynski’s departure from Harvard.

From Harvard Prodigy to the Unabomber

Years after leaving Harvard, Kaczynski increasingly withdrew from mainstream society. Between 1978 and 1995, he carried out a campaign of bomb attacks, sending or planting homemade explosive devices targeting people associated with universities, airlines and other organisations.

The attacks killed three people and injured many others.

The FBI investigation was designated UNABOM, a name derived from “UNiversity and Airline BOMbing.” The man responsible eventually became known around the world as the Unabomber.

For years, investigators struggled to determine his identity. Kaczynski took extensive measures to conceal who he was, turning the case into one of the FBI’s most difficult and expensive manhunts.

How Was Ted Kaczynski Caught?

A major breakthrough came in 1995, when Kaczynski sent a lengthy manifesto expressing his views on modern technology and society.

The FBI ultimately agreed to have the manifesto published, hoping that someone familiar with the writer would recognise his language or ideas. That decision became pivotal to the investigation.

Kaczynski’s younger brother, David Kaczynski, read the manifesto and noticed similarities between its ideas and the writing in letters he had received from Ted. David contacted authorities, allowing investigators to connect Kaczynski to the bombing campaign.

Kaczynski was arrested in April 1996 at his remote cabin in Montana.

UNABOMBER Cast and Release Date

Jacob Tremblay stars as the young Ted Kaczynski, while Russell Crowe plays Harvard psychologist Henry Murray. Shailene Woodley portrays FBI agent Joanne Miller, who is involved in the investigation into the Unabomber.

The supporting cast includes Annabelle Wallis as Christiana Morgan, along with Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg and Marc Menchaca.

The film is directed by Janus Metz and written by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves. Sophie Cassidy is the producer, while Donald J. Lee, Chalsen and Greaves serve as executive producers.

Netflix describes UNABOMBER as a drama inspired by true events that moves between Kaczynski’s years at Harvard and the FBI investigation that eventually led to his capture. The film focuses on his transformation from a 16-year-old Harvard prodigy into the Unabomber and the controversial psychological experiments involving Henry Murray.

The film will premiere on Netflix on September 25, 2026.
