Five contestants made it all the way to the final stage of The 1% Club — but a deceptively simple balloon puzzle left every one of them struggling to find the answer.
Just one week after Maccisha made history by becoming the first contestant to take home the full £100,000 jackpot, the ITV quiz once again demonstrated why its toughest questions can be so difficult to crack.
Hosted by Lee Mack, The 1% Club puts 100 contestants through a series of increasingly challenging questions. Unlike traditional quiz shows, the programme focuses on logic, reasoning and common sense rather than general knowledge.
The ultimate test is the so-called “1% question”, which is designed to be answered by only a tiny proportion of the population.
And this time, five finalists were unable to solve a puzzle that could have earned them a share of £97,000.
Can you spot the three missing letters?
The question centred on a man named Vince, whose friends wanted to celebrate his engagement with a set of balloons.
His best man had already bought enough balloons to spell:
STAG LOCATION
Vince’s other friends wanted him to add balloons so they could display:
CONGRATULATIONS
The contestants were then asked:
“What were the other three balloon letters he needed to buy for them to be able to display the word CONGRATULATIONS?”
It sounds straightforward when written down.
But the five remaining contestants — Simon, Nicholas, Sam, Jenna and Kit — had only 30 seconds to work it out while sitting in front of the studio audience and with £97,000 potentially at stake.
All five struggled.
The repeated letter was the key
The obvious approach is to compare the letters in STAG LOCATION with those in CONGRATULATIONS and identify what appears to be missing.
That is where the puzzle catches you out.
The correct three letters were:
R, U and N
All five contestants managed to identify U.
Everyone except Sam also found R.
Sam was the only contestant to spot the third and most easily overlooked letter: N.
The reason is that CONGRATULATIONS contains two Ns, while the existing phrase does not provide enough of them. Simply looking for letters that do not appear at all in “STAG LOCATION” therefore leads you in the wrong direction.
The contestants needed to recognise not only which letters were missing, but also which letters appeared more than once in the target word.
Five finalists, one correct letter
The pressure of the final question proved too much for the remaining players.
All five gave an incorrect answer, meaning the potential £97,000 prize went unclaimed.
One viewer admitted that the puzzle seemed much easier from home, writing: “As with many of these, it wasn’t hard while sat on me sofa, but I suspect my brain would scramble in the studio.”
That reaction gets to the heart of The 1% Club. Viewers can attempt the questions from the comfort of their sofas, without the same pressure faced by contestants with thousands of pounds at stake and only seconds to find a solution.
Of the five finalists, four left with nothing. Kit was the only one to take money home, leaving with £1,000.
The result came just a week after Maccisha made The 1% Club history by successfully answering the final question and claiming the entire £100,000 jackpot.
