30 seconds. One simple sentence. 15 contestants gone. The 1% Club put players to the test with a sentence most people have seen countless times: “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” They had just 30 seconds to choose which letter appeared most often — A, E, I or O. It sounds easy, but many could be tempted to choose E, the letter commonly considered the most frequently used in English. The correct answer, however, was O, which appears four times in the sentence. That small detail was enough to send 15 contestants out of the game. Would you have spotted the right answer before the clock hit zero?

The 1% Club: 15 Contestants Eliminated by a 30-Second Letter Puzzle

Quiz show question: Which letter appears most often in "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog"? Options: A, E, I, O.

A seemingly simple sentence left 15 contestants out of the game after they failed to identify which letter appeared most often.

On The 1% Club, hosted by Lee Mack, contestants are challenged with logic and common-sense puzzles designed to become progressively harder. In this round, they had just 30 seconds to solve a question based on one of the best-known sentences in the English language.

Can You Spot the Most Common Letter?

The 15 Out game show set, with contestants seated in a circular tiered arrangement around a central stage.

The sentence displayed to the contestants was:

“The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”

Lee asked which letter appeared most frequently in the sentence, giving players four choices: A, E, I or O.

As the clock ticked down, Lee kept the mood light with a joke about the foxes in his neighbourhood, saying they were “very cocky” and even knocked on his door to remind him to put the bins out.

But when the 30 seconds were over, 15 contestants had chosen incorrectly and were eliminated.

Quiz question: Are there more happy or sad faces in the image? Fifteen smiley faces are shown, some happy and some sad.

The correct answer was O.

The letter appears four times, in “brown,” “fox,” “over” and “dog.”

Many players may have been tempted to choose E, since it is widely known as the most commonly used letter in the English alphabet. However, within this particular sentence, E appears only three times — in “The,” “over” and “the.”

Meanwhile, A appears once in “lazy,” while I appears once in “quick.”

Another Brutal Test of Logic

The result was another reminder of how quickly a straightforward-looking puzzle can catch The 1% Club contestants off guard.

Since its debut three years ago, the ITV quiz has become known for questions that reward careful observation and logical thinking rather than general knowledge.

Previous episodes have delivered similarly unforgiving challenges. One puzzle involving 18 emoji-style faces asked players whether there were more happy or sad faces. Once time expired, 30 contestants were eliminated.

Other difficult questions have asked players to identify matching butterflies, find symbols that remained in the same order when read in reverse, calculate combinations for displaying four digits on one hand and decode a strange piece of writing.

Another challenge presented four words — Unopenable, Understandable, Unquestionable and Undefineable — and asked contestants to identify the one that did not contain three consecutive letters of the alphabet. That question eliminated 18 players.

For the contestants facing Lee Mack’s latest puzzle, however, the challenge came down to four letters and one deceptively familiar sentence.

The question now is simple: could you have spotted the O in just 30 seconds?
