Harry’s Quiet Gesture Toward William After the Queen’s Death May Offer a Glimpse of Hope for the Estranged Brothers

More than six years after Prince Harry stepped away from royal duties, his relationship with Prince William remains deeply strained. Yet one moment following the death of Queen Elizabeth II has been highlighted as a rare sign that the bond between the brothers may not have disappeared completely.

Harry’s upcoming 42nd birthday will be his first celebrated on British soil since returning from the United States, prompting fresh speculation about whether his return could eventually create an opportunity for the brothers to repair their relationship.

One well-placed source previously told the Daily Mail that William had become so unwilling to discuss Harry that mentioning his brother in his presence could result in someone being asked to leave the room.

But according to body language expert Judi James, their public interactions have revealed something more complicated beneath the surface.

A Rare Moment of Respect

James believes Harry and William still display what she describes as deeply ingrained patterns of behaviour when they are together.

“The body language cues and subliminal rituals between Harry and his brother often shows signs of a synchronicity of spirit,” she told the Daily Mail, arguing that the brothers shared unique experiences and formed an unusually strong bond while growing up.

The Queen’s death in 2022 provided one of the clearest examples.

Following the monarch’s death, Harry, William, Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton appeared together outside Windsor Castle as they viewed the sea of flowers left by mourners.

According to James, Harry appeared to instinctively give William and Kate space to grieve.

“The sense of respect seemed to be in Harry’s DNA here,” she said, noting that Harry allowed his brother and sister-in-law to move ahead and take in the tributes without interruption.

As the so-called “Fab Four” walked away from Windsor Castle, Harry reportedly slowed his own pace with Meghan so William and Kate could move further ahead. James also noted that Harry crouched down to examine the flowers, which she interpreted as a way of signalling that Meghan should wait while William and Kate had their own moment of reflection.

For James, the behaviour suggested that Harry was able to slip back into a familiar role alongside his older brother despite years of conflict.

The Brothers Still Mirror Each Other

James also pointed to what she described as an enduring tendency for the brothers to mirror one another.

William and Harry were seen walking with similar posture and rhythm, while at one point both stood with their heads bowed and hands clasped in front of them.

Even when they were positioned on opposite sides of the road and greeting members of the public separately, James observed that both used the same gesture of placing a hand across the stomach.

At another point, the brothers were photographed crouching in similar positions while their wives stood nearby.

James said this kind of mirroring had been evident since the brothers were teenagers. While it once reflected the closeness of a “like-minded double act,” she argued that the instinct remained visible even after their relationship became increasingly fractured.

She suggested that these unconscious behaviours could provide a small reason for optimism about their future relationship.

Could Harry and William Reconcile?

James believes the brothers’ behaviour suggests that their relationship may still operate on a deeper level than their very public disagreements would suggest.

The possibility of reconciliation has also been raised by people close to Harry.

One friend told the Daily Mail that it was “too soon” to expect a public reunion but said there was hope that the brothers could eventually appear together again — something that could significantly change the way their relationship is viewed.

“There is communication between them,” the friend said.

The source also suggested that Harry had been in a very difficult place mentally around the time he decided to move to the United States, adding that he had matured and that becoming a father had changed him.

Another source described the situation more cautiously, saying there was “a bit of optimism” that attitudes toward Harry could be changing, but stressing that any progress would likely happen gradually.

A Shared Promise to Honour Princess Diana

Despite their differences, Harry and William have long been linked by their shared connection to their late mother, Princess Diana.

In Finding Freedom, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand recounted comments from a close friend of Harry who said both brothers remained deeply committed to continuing Diana’s legacy.

The friend said that no amount of hurt feelings would prevent them from pursuing that shared priority together.

Their different approaches to Diana’s memory were nevertheless visible at the unveiling of her statue in 2021.

The brothers marked what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday by unveiling a sculpture created by Ian Rank-Broadley in the remodelled Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace, one of their mother’s favourite places.

The event had originally been expected to be a much larger celebration, but it was ultimately treated as a private gathering amid the tension between the brothers and concerns over media coverage.

Meghan remained at the Sussexes’ £11 million Montecito home with Archie, then two, and Lilibet Diana, who had been born just 21 days before the statue unveiling at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

The Queen’s Funeral Offered Another Glimpse of Unity

The brothers’ ability to put their differences aside was again visible following Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

At the Queen’s funeral service at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, on September 19, 2022, William directed Harry and Meghan toward their seats ahead of the committal service.

The brothers had also appeared together during the procession of the Queen’s coffin to Westminster Hall the previous week.

For a brief period, their shared appearances seemed to suggest that the family might be moving toward reconciliation.

The four — William, Harry, Kate and Meghan — also came together for the walkabout outside Windsor Castle, marking the first time in years that the two couples had appeared publicly as a group.

To royal observers and fans, those moments looked like a possible turning point.

But the apparent thaw did not last.

Royal correspondent Robert Jobson later wrote in his 2023 book Our King that the belief the walkabout had produced a genuine rapprochement was, sadly, an “illusion.”

It also proved to be the final public appearance together of the four once known as the “Fab Four.”

With Harry now back in Britain, speculation about whether the brothers could eventually rebuild their relationship has resurfaced. For now, there is no confirmation of a reconciliation — but the small gestures observed in their past encounters suggest that, beneath years of public disagreement, the connection between the two brothers may be more complicated than it appears.
