The 1% Club contestants all stumped by fiendishly difficult final question
All nine finalists on the Australian version of The 1% Club were left without an answer when they faced a particularly difficult final puzzle.
The Australian adaptation follows the same basic concept as the UK ITV quiz show hosted by Lee Mack, challenging 100 contestants with questions based on logic and common sense rather than traditional general knowledge. The top prize on the Australian version is $100,000 AUD (£53,553) for anyone who can correctly answer the question that only 1% of the population is expected to solve.
But in one episode, the entire group of nine finalists reached the final hurdle only to be defeated by a baffling number sequence.
Nine contestants, 30 seconds and no correct answers

Hosted by Jim Jefferies, the episode ended with the contestants being shown a sequence of numbers:
1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 1, 3, 1, 2, 2, 1, 1
They were then asked:
“What number comes next in this sequence? You have 30 seconds to answer. Your time starts now.”
The challenge quickly proved overwhelming.
Jefferies warned the contestants when they had 15 seconds remaining and again when only five seconds were left. Despite having made it all the way to the final question, none of the nine players managed to work out what came next before the clock expired.
With no one producing a correct answer, the prize money remained unclaimed.
The solution was based on saying the numbers aloud

After time ran out, Jefferies revealed the answer: 13112221.
The sequence follows the well-known “look-and-say” pattern. Instead of calculating the next number mathematically, contestants needed to describe the numbers in the previous line out loud and use that description to form the next one.
The sequence begins with a single 1, which can be described as “one one”, producing 11. That becomes “two ones”, giving 21. The next line describes one two, one one, producing 1211.
The same process continues from there.
The final visible line, 312211, can be described as one three, one one, two twos and two ones. Writing those quantities and numbers together produces 13112221.
Once the trick is explained, the sequence becomes much easier to follow. Under the pressure of a 30-second countdown, however, the nine finalists were unable to make the connection.
Even the host felt for the contestants

After revealing the solution, Jefferies reacted to the fact that every contestant had been stumped.
“Ah man, that sucks,” he said.
The difficult question also sparked discussion among viewers, many of whom admitted they would have struggled to identify the pattern without having seen a puzzle like it before.
One TikTok user said they would be surprised if anyone could solve it within the time limit unless they had encountered the puzzle previously.
Another viewer agreed, saying it was “hard to get in 30 seconds if you’ve never seen it before”, while adding that the time pressure was presumably part of the challenge.
The sequence has since been cited among the particularly challenging questions from The 1% Club. It demonstrates how the show can turn a seemingly straightforward number puzzle into a race against the clock, where recognising the right way to read the information matters just as much as knowing the answer.
