The 1% Club yoga question eliminates 27 contestants despite being rated a 70% question

A yoga sequence proved unexpectedly difficult for contestants on The 1% Club, with 27 players eliminated in the third round despite the question being classed as one that 70 percent of the public should have been able to answer.

Hosted by Lee Mack, the ITV quiz show puts 100 contestants through a series of increasingly challenging puzzles. Rather than testing traditional general knowledge, the programme focuses on logic, reasoning and common sense, with each question given a percentage rating based on how many people are expected to solve it.

The ultimate goal is to survive until the final 1% question, which only a small proportion of the public would be expected to answer correctly.

27 contestants caught out by a yoga sequence

The question presented to the contestants was:

“Which yoga position comes next in this sequence?”

Three possible answers — A, B or C — were shown, and players had 30 seconds to decide.

When the time was up, Lee revealed that the correct answer was C.

The solution depended on counting how many limbs the figure had on the floor at each stage of the sequence.

The first pose had one limb on the floor, the second had two, and the third had three. The next position therefore had to show four limbs on the floor.

Despite the pattern, the puzzle eliminated a huge 27 contestants.

Sarah admits she picked the pose that looked most comfortable

Lee then turned to Sarah, one of the contestants eliminated by the question, and asked what she had been thinking.

Her answer was refreshingly simple.

“I just went for the one that looked the comfiest really,” she explained.

Sarah also revealed that she was an assistant psychologist and had been analysing Lee throughout the game.

“Have you? What have you discovered?” Lee asked.

Sarah jokingly replied: “Very small IQ.”

She could barely contain her laughter as Lee responded to the cheeky assessment.

Lee then moved on to another eliminated contestant, Wain, who turned out to be a professional singer and a George Michael tribute act.

After discovering his profession, Lee asked Wain to give the audience a taste of his performance. Wain sang, impressing both Lee and the crowd.

Lee told him he sounded very good before admitting:

“I’m not going to lie Wain, when I saw you and heard you talk, that is not what I was expecting to come out of your mouth.”

“I get that a lot,” Wain replied.

Lee said he was very impressed by the performance.

14 contestants were eliminated in the opening round

The yoga puzzle was not the only question to catch out a large group of players.

Earlier in the episode, 14 contestants were eliminated by a 90% question that asked who would say the number 20 when Oliver, Emily and Rosie took turns counting from one to 20.

Oliver said 1, Emily said 2 and Rosie said 3, with the pattern continuing between the three contestants.

The answer was Emily.

Because the three players take turns, Rosie would finish on 18, Oliver would then say 19, and Emily would say 20.

The question was intended to be straightforward, but 14 players failed to make it through the opening round.

The 1% Club is known for tricky puzzles

The yoga question is just one example of the unusual challenges contestants have faced on The 1% Club.

Previous puzzles have asked players to compare butterflies and identify which were identical, work out which groups of symbols remained in the same order when read backwards, calculate the possible combinations for displaying four digits on one hand, and crack a diary entry written in secret code.

Other challenges have involved counting visible eyes in an image made up of letters, symbols and emojis, navigating a numbered grid from 1 to 49 using word clues, and identifying a common food whose letters had been rearranged into alphabetical order.

The format is designed to test how contestants process information rather than how much general knowledge they have. As the questions become harder, small details and simple patterns can become surprisingly difficult to recognise under the pressure of the clock.
