Midsomer Murders Fans May Have Found Their Next Crime Obsession — The BBC’s ‘Excellent’ New Detective Drama Hides Dark Secrets Behind An Idyllic Setting Where Almost Everyone Has Something To Conceal

Midsomer Murders Fans Have a ‘Brilliant’ New Six-Part BBC Mystery to Binge — With Lesley Manville and a Star-Studded Cast

Cosy crime fans searching for their next mystery may have found exactly the right weekend binge.

A new six-part BBC whodunnit from acclaimed crime writer Anthony Horowitz has arrived on BBC iPlayer — and early viewers are already calling it “brilliant,” “fabulous” and praising its unusual story-within-a-story format.

Marble Hall Murders brings Lesley Manville back as book editor turned amateur detective Susan Ryeland, with Tim McMullan once again appearing as fictional investigator Atticus Pünd.

And for fans of classic British mysteries, Horowitz’s involvement carries some serious pedigree.

His television credits include Midsomer Murders, Foyle’s War and Agatha Christie’s Poirot.

Two Murder Mysteries Collide

Susan Ryeland (LESLEY MANVILLE) in Marble Hall Murders

Marble Hall Murders continues the story established in Magpie Murders and Moonflower Murders and is adapted from the third and final novel in Horowitz’s Susan Ryeland series.

This time, Susan is hired to work on a continuation of the fictional Atticus Pünd novels being written by a troubled young author.

But her latest editing job soon becomes considerably more dangerous.

Susan finds herself drawn into another murder investigation — and unexpectedly becomes a suspect herself.

At the same time, viewers enter the fictional world of the manuscript she is editing.

There, Atticus Pünd is visiting Corfu when he becomes involved in the murder of Lady Margaret Chalfont, played by Patricia Hodge.

Pünd begins investigating the victim’s family with help from a Greek detective played by Zubin Varla.

The result is effectively two mysteries unfolding alongside each other, with the fictional investigation and Susan’s real-world predicament becoming part of the same elaborate puzzle.

Viewers Are Already Asking for More

The six episodes arrived on the BBC on 26 September, and early social-media reaction highlighted both the mystery and its cast.

“Loved the Marble Hall Murders, it’s so original and great guest stars,” one viewer wrote.

Others simply described the series as “brilliant” and “fabulous.”

Another viewer was particularly impressed by Manville and McMullan’s partnership, writing:

“We need more Atticus Pund, the interaction between Lesley Manville and Tim McMullan is just fabulous.”

That relationship has become central to the series’ distinctive identity, allowing the drama to move between Susan’s world and the traditional detective-fiction universe inhabited by Pünd.

Lesley Manville Leads a Huge British Cast

Elmer Waysmith (MARK BONNAR) in Marble Hall Murders

Oscar nominee Lesley Manville, whose credits include Phantom Thread and The Crown, once again leads the series as Susan.

Tim McMullan, also known for The Crown, Patrick Melrose and The Serpent, returns as Atticus Pünd.

But the supporting cast is equally impressive.

Mark Bonnar, familiar to crime fans from Shetland and Dept. Q, appears alongside Patricia Hodge, whose credits include All Creatures Great and Small and A Very English Scandal.

Whitechapel and Spooks star Rupert Penry-Jones also joins the ensemble.

Other cast members include Jamie Blackley, Daniel Cerqueira, Harry Lloyd, Anneika Rose, Danny Sapani, Yasmin Al Massri and Zubin Varla.

A Natural Pick for Cosy Crime Fans

Miriam Crace (PATRICIA HODGE), Leilah Crace (YASMIN AL MASSRI) in Marble Hall Murders

Rather than relying on relentless darkness, the series combines murder with literary puzzles, eccentric suspects and the pleasures of a traditional whodunnit.

Its unusual structure adds another layer: viewers aren’t simply trying to solve one crime alongside the detective.

They’re watching a mystery inside another mystery, where details from a fictional manuscript may carry significance outside it.

For viewers who enjoy the intricate cases of Midsomer Murders or classic Agatha Christie-style detective stories, Horowitz’s latest adaptation offers six episodes of clues, suspects and misdirection to work through.

And there is no need to wait for the mystery to unfold week by week.

All six episodes of Marble Hall Murders are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
