Dennis Haskins, Beloved For Playing Principal Mr. Belding Across Generations Of The Hit Franchise, Has Died At 75—Leaving Behind A Character Millions Grew Up Watching.

Saved by the Bell Star Dennis Haskins Dies at 75 — as Friends Remember the Man Behind Bayside High’s Beloved Mr. Belding

Dennis Haskins Dead: 'Saved by the Bell' Actor Was 75

Dennis Haskins, the actor who became part of a generation’s television memories as Principal Richard Belding on Saved by the Bell, has died at 75.

His longtime agent and friend Jay Schachter confirmed the news to Variety on Monday. A cause of death has not been announced, and further details surrounding his passing have not been released.

For millions of viewers, Haskins will forever be remembered as the exasperated but ultimately caring principal trying to keep order at Bayside High.

For those who knew him away from the cameras, however, the tributes have focused on something else: how much he genuinely loved the people who loved him.

His Agent Remembers a Friend of More Than 20 Years

Schachter described Haskins’ death as a “tragic loss” and reflected on their friendship of more than two decades.

“Everyone loved Mr. Belding and those of us who got to know Dennis loved him even more,” he said.

Schachter remembered Haskins as someone who had an extraordinary affection for his fans and would make time for them whenever possible.

“He was my client and dear friend for over 20 years, and I will miss him terribly,” Schachter added. “I’m heartbroken.”

That connection with viewers followed Haskins long after the television role that made him famous had ended.

The Principal a Generation Never Forgot

Haskins appeared as Richard Belding throughout Saved by the Bell, which ran from 1989 to 1992.

He appeared in nearly 90 episodes, becoming one of the most recognizable figures at Bayside High alongside the show’s young stars.

His character was frequently tasked with dealing with the schemes and chaos surrounding students including Zack Morris, A.C. Slater and Screech Powers.

And he had a line that became instantly recognizable to fans:

“Hey, hey, hey, what is going on here?”

But Haskins’ history with Belding stretched beyond the original series.

He had already played the character in the 1988 series Good Morning, Miss Bliss, which preceded Saved by the Bell.

He later returned for the television movie Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style and continued portraying Belding in the spinoff Saved by the Bell: The New Class.

The result was a character Haskins remained associated with for decades.

Although Mr. Belding became his signature role, Haskins continued working across film and television.

His credits included A Million Ways to Die in the West, Abstruse, A Bennett Song Holiday, Trailer Park Shark and Jennifer Falls, among other projects.

Yet his connection to Saved by the Bell fans remained a defining part of his public life.

One place where that became particularly apparent was Dimples Karaoke in Burbank, California.

The former bar paid tribute to Haskins after his death, recalling how regularly he spent time there.

The Karaoke Bar That Became His Second Home

According to Dimples, Haskins became such a familiar presence that some customers mistakenly believed he owned the establishment.

He didn’t.

He simply loved being there.

“Dennis was a staple at Dimples,” the bar’s tribute said. “A lot of people thought he owned it, but he didn’t. He just loved the place and its people.”

The tribute remembered Haskins singing, meeting people and happily posing for selfies with fans.

Although Dimples closed around 11 years ago, the establishment said people continued associating Haskins with what had become his beloved “second home.”

To the wider world, he was Mr. Belding.

“To us,” the tribute continued, “he was much more than that.”

Fans’ Messages Still Reached Him

Perhaps the most touching part of the tribute concerned Haskins’ final years.

Dimples revealed that messages from people attempting to contact the actor had still been passed along to him.

“If you tried to reach out to him in the last few years, I did read your messages to him, and you were heard,” the tribute said.

It was a fitting final detail for an actor whose agent remembered him as someone who always made time for his audience.

Haskins spent years playing the authority figure constantly trying to control the chaos at Bayside High. But away from television, those closest to him remembered a warm, approachable man who enjoyed singing, meeting strangers and embracing the affection that followed him decades after Saved by the Bell ended.

Dennis Haskins was 75. A cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
