It sounds like the kind of question you should be able to answer almost instantly. But on The 1% Club, that confidence can disappear very quickly. With the clock ticking, contestants had to follow the relationships between all four names without getting distracted by the way the question was worded. One small mistake in the chain was enough to send their reasoning in completely the wrong direction. And when the answers were revealed, the damage was brutal.

The 1% Club Leaves 14 Contestants Stumped With A Deceptively Simple Age Riddle

It looked like the kind of question contestants should have been able to solve in seconds.

Instead, 14 players were eliminated after becoming caught out by a deceptively simple age riddle on The 1% Club.

Hosted by Lee Mack, the ITV quiz show is designed to test logic and common sense rather than general knowledge, with contestants facing increasingly difficult questions as they battle for the chance to win up to £100,000.

But one question proved far trickier than expected.

Could You Work Out Who Was The Oldest?

Quiz: Richard is older than Clare; Jojo is older than Hennie; Hennie is older than Richard. Who is the oldest? Multiple choice answers: Richard, Clare, Jojo, Hennie.

The question gave contestants three simple statements:

“Richard is older than Clare. Jojo is older than Hennie. Hennie is older than Richard. Who is the oldest?”

Players were then given four possible answers:

  • Richard
  • Clare
  • Jojo
  • Hennie

At first glance, it seemed straightforward.

But the challenge was to carefully follow the chain of ages rather than focus on just one of the statements.

Richard is older than Clare, while Hennie is older than Richard. That already places Hennie above Richard and Clare.

Then comes the crucial clue: Jojo is older than Hennie.

Put the three statements together and the order suddenly becomes clear.

14 Players Failed To Spot The Answer

Screenshot of a game show question: "Richard is older than Clare. Jojo is older than Hennie. Hennie is older than Richard. Who is the oldest?" with multiple-choice answers.

Despite being a 60% question, meaning just over half of the public would be expected to answer correctly, the puzzle still managed to wipe out 14 contestants.

The elimination showed just how easily even a relatively simple logic question can become difficult when contestants are working against the clock.

With several names and relationships to keep track of, one missed detail was enough to send players in the wrong direction.

And that is exactly what makes The 1% Club so challenging: the questions rarely require specialist knowledge. Instead, contestants have to slow down, read carefully and resist the temptation to jump at the first answer that seems right.

The Answer Was Jojo

Quiz question: Richard is older than Clare, Jojo is older than Hennie, and Hennie is older than Richard. Who is the oldest? Multiple choice answers are provided.

Once all three statements are followed through, the oldest person is Jojo.

Hennie is older than Richard, and Jojo is older than Hennie, placing Jojo above everyone else in the chain.

For those who spotted the relationship immediately, it was a relatively simple piece of logic.

For the 14 contestants who were eliminated, however, the countdown clearly made things much harder.

And this was far from the only supposedly easy question to cause chaos on the show.

Previous episodes have seen large groups of contestants wiped out by questions involving words, letters and seemingly obvious visual puzzles — proving that The 1% Club can turn the simplest-looking problem into a serious test under pressure.

The question may have been rated at 60%, but 14 contestants discovered just how quickly a simple chain of clues can become a nightmare when the clock is ticking.
