Netflix Viewers Are Flocking to This Cozy 2-Season Crime Drama — and It’s Already Climbed to No. 3 in the U.S.

Netflix viewers looking for their next easy crime binge appear to have found one. Just a week after arriving on the platform, a two-season detective drama has surged to No. 3 in the U.S. — mixing murder-of-the-week mysteries with a quiet coastal setting, an unusually compassionate detective and a slow-burning romance that gives viewers another reason to keep watching.

Murder in a Small Town originally premiered on Fox in 2024, but its arrival on Netflix has introduced the series to a much larger streaming audience.

According to the supplied report citing FlixPatrol, the show reached No. 3 in the United States only a week after landing on Netflix.

And unlike viewers discovering a canceled series years too late, newcomers already have another reason to become invested.

Season 3 has been confirmed.

A Big-City Detective Tries to Start Over

Tyler Posey in Murder in a Small Town.

Based on L.R. Wright’s Alberg and Cassandra Mysteries novels, the series follows Karl Alberg, played by Rossif Sutherland, son of the late Donald Sutherland.

Karl is a burned-out detective who leaves Minneapolis behind for what should be a quieter existence in the coastal town of Gibsons, British Columbia.

He takes over as police chief expecting something considerably calmer than big-city law enforcement.

The town has other ideas.

Behind the beautiful scenery are murders, secrets and lies that repeatedly drag Karl back into the kind of detective work he had hoped to escape.

The contrast is central to the show’s appeal.

It has the comfortable atmosphere of a cozy small-town drama while still delivering the mystery and suspense viewers expect from a crime procedural.

The First Case Quickly Destroys the Illusion of a Peaceful Town

Karl doesn’t have much time to settle into his new surroundings.

One of the show’s early mysteries involves elderly resident Carlyle Burke, played by R.H. Thomson, being discovered dead in his living room.

Suddenly the apparently idyllic community doesn’t look quite so harmless.

Karl is forced back into investigative mode, beginning a pattern that drives the series: new crimes revealing what may be hiding beneath the surface of an otherwise peaceful town.

But solving murders is only half of Karl’s story.

A Slow-Burn Romance Gives the Crime Drama Its Heart

While adapting to his new life, Karl meets local librarian Cassandra Lee, played by Smallville star Kristin Kreuk.

Neither character rushes toward romance.

Both are cautious about allowing someone new into their lives, giving their relationship room to develop gradually alongside the criminal investigations.

Their chemistry provides the show with a warmer emotional center than viewers might expect from a murder procedural.

Karl also has a team surrounding him, including Mya Lowe as Corporal Edwina Yen, Aaron Douglas as Sergeant Sid Sokolowski, Fritzy-Klevans Destine as rookie Andy Kendrick, and Savonna Spracklin as police receptionist Isabella Harbud.

Across its run, the drama has also attracted recognizable guest stars including James Cromwell, Devon Sawa, Erica Durance, Tyler Posey, Noah Reid and Malcolm-Jamal Warner.

Its Detective Isn’t Another Impossible Genius

The television landscape certainly isn’t short of brilliant investigators.

From Sherlock to The Mentalist and more recent procedural hits, crime dramas frequently center on an eccentric genius whose extraordinary abilities leave everyone else struggling to keep up.

Karl Alberg is deliberately different.

He isn’t defined by an almost supernatural talent for solving crimes.

He’s calm.

He’s caring.

He worries about his daughters.

He has an artistic side that he largely keeps private in his home studio.

That more grounded personality allows the character to feel approachable rather than intimidating.

As the source’s review puts it, the show may sometimes offer a relatively predictable murder investigation, but it pairs those cases with a “not-so-predictable lead.”

And that distinction may explain why the familiar procedural formula still feels comforting rather than stale.

Familiar Enough to Be Cozy, Different Enough to Keep Watching

Murder in a Small Town isn’t attempting to reinvent crime television completely.

The case-of-the-week structure is one audiences have been watching successfully for decades.

Instead, the series makes smaller changes to a familiar formula.

Its coastal British Columbia setting provides a picturesque backdrop.

Its central detective is more empathetic than eccentric.

The supporting characters give the police station a community feel.

And Karl’s developing relationship with Cassandra provides an emotional storyline that can continue between individual cases.

That combination makes the show particularly easy to binge.

Viewers can become invested in each week’s mystery while still having larger relationships and character arcs pulling them toward the next episode.

Reaching No. 3 in the U.S. after only a week on Netflix suggests plenty of viewers have already fallen for that formula. With two seasons ready to binge, a third officially confirmed and a detective who feels refreshingly human, Murder in a Small Town may be the cozy crime obsession Netflix viewers didn’t know they were missing.
