£97,000 Slipped Through Their Fingers! — Five The 1% Club Finalists Had Just 30 Seconds To Solve One Ridiculously Simple Puzzle… And Every Single One Failed !Five contestants made it all the way to the final question on The 1% Club, with an incredible £97,000 prize pot within reach. Then Lee Mack gave them just 30 seconds to crack a puzzle that appeared deceptively simple

The 1% Club final question leaves all five contestants stumped as £97,000 prize goes unclaimed

Five contestants made it through to the final question on The 1% Club — but none of them managed to solve the puzzle in 30 seconds, leaving the entire prize pot unclaimed.

The ITV quiz show returned on 3 May with its familiar format: 100 contestants faced a series of increasingly difficult questions, with £1,000 added to the prize pot for every player eliminated. Contestants could also use a pass to skip a question or take their £1,000 and leave the game.

By the final round, five players remained. They could either split £10,000 between them or risk everything on the notoriously difficult 1% question for the chance to win the full prize pot, which had reached £97,000.

All five chose to keep playing.

1% Club question stumps everyone in the studio and meant no one won any money

Can you solve the 1% question in 30 seconds?

The final puzzle presented the contestants with a sentence containing several capitalised words:

“My SON TED ate raw FOOD and got SICK, then went to BED with me by his SIDE.”

They had just 30 seconds to work out the word that connected them.

It proved to be far more difficult than it looked.

Some contestants left their answers blank, while others wrote down guesses that were ultimately rejected by host Lee Mack. With the clock running down, nobody found the connection in time.

The correct answer was “SEA.”

The word can be placed before each of the capitalised words to create new words: season, seated, seafood, seasick, seabed and seaside.

Once the solution is revealed, the pattern seems remarkably straightforward. But under the pressure of a 30-second countdown, spotting the connection between six seemingly unrelated words was another matter entirely.

As a result, all five finalists missed out on the £97,000 jackpot.

Some of the show’s toughest puzzles

It seems so obvious when you put it like that (ITV)

The difficulty of the final question is very much part of The 1% Club‘s appeal. Rather than relying purely on general knowledge, the show often hides its answers in unexpected wordplay, patterns or seemingly insignificant details.

Over the course of the series, contestants have faced plenty of similarly deceptive challenges, including:

  • What is the first number whose letters appear in alphabetical order when it is spelled out?
  • If January equals 717, March equals 5315 and June equals 4624, what does August equal?
  • Lee notices that his milometer reads 16961, a number that reads the same backwards and forwards. What is the next mileage that will do the same?
  • What do Into, Therefore, Evaluate and Benign have in common?
  • A bat and a ball cost £1.10 in total, with the bat costing £1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

For the five finalists on 3 May, however, none of those puzzles mattered. The only thing standing between them and the jackpot was one deceptively simple word — and “SEA” proved impossible to spot before the 30 seconds ran out.
