Zach Top Welcomes Lukas Nelson Onstage For A Memorable Cover Of Willie Nelson’s “Last Thing I Needed First Thing This Morning” In Arkansas
Zach Top gave fans an unexpected highlight during his Saturday night show in Arkansas, bringing Lukas Nelson onstage for a heartfelt performance of one of Willie Nelson’s most beloved songs.
With just a few dates remaining on his 2026 tour, Top still had a few surprises in store. The “I Never Lie” singer performed at the Walmart AMP in Rogers, Arkansas, on October 24, where he welcomed his opening act, Lukas Nelson, back to the stage for a special duet.
The pairing made perfect sense. With the son of country music legend Willie Nelson already backstage, the two artists took the opportunity to honor his father’s catalog with a rendition of the 1982 classic “Last Thing I Needed First Thing This Morning.”
The performance quickly caught the attention of fans online, with many praising it as one of the song’s standout live versions. It is easy to understand why. The combination of Top’s traditional country sound and Lukas’ connection to the original artist’s musical legacy made for a particularly fitting tribute.

Zach Top And Lukas Nelson Put Their Own Stamp On A Willie Nelson Classic
Top, who hails from Washington state, took the lead on the opening verse, delivering the familiar ballad in his own understated country style. Lukas then stepped forward to handle the second verse, adding another dimension to the performance.
The arrangement also benefited from the unmistakable sound of a whining steel guitar, an instrument that helped give the rendition its classic country character.
For fans familiar with Chris Stapleton’s 2017 recording of the song on From A Room: Volume 1, this latest version offers another compelling interpretation of the Willie Nelson favorite. Both performances demonstrate how the song continues to resonate with artists and audiences across generations.
The duet also adds to the growing case for Top recording a full cover album alongside some of his well-known musical friends. His ability to bring traditional country material to life, particularly when paired with artists who have a personal connection to the songs, makes the idea an intriguing possibility.
Top had already paid tribute to another country favorite during the Arkansas show, delivering a performance of John Anderson’s “Seminole Wind.” He previously teamed up with Jake Worthington for a rendition of the song in Jacksonville, Florida, making the latest tribute another notable moment for fans of traditional country music.
Zach Top And Lukas Nelson Have More Shows Ahead
The Arkansas performance comes as both artists approach the end of a busy run of tour dates.
Top and Lukas Nelson are scheduled to return to the stage together on Thursday, October 29, in Atlanta. Top will then wrap up his 2026 Cold Beer & Country Music Tour with a final stop in Nashville on Friday, October 30.
His Tennessee plans do not end there. On Sunday, November 1, Top is set to premiere his first Red Rocks concert film at a drive-in theater in Watertown. The event will also feature a live performance for those attending in person.
After an Arkansas show filled with tributes and an unexpected collaboration, the remaining dates give fans more opportunities to catch Top before he closes out his 2026 tour.
And if the duet with Lukas Nelson is any indication, Top’s appreciation for country music’s roots remains a defining part of what makes his performances stand out.
