Tricky The 1% Club question sends 23 contestants home in one round. Could you solve it?

One deceptively simple question was enough to eliminate 23 contestants from ITV’s The 1% Club in a single round.

The challenge asked players to identify which number, when written out in full, contains every vowel exactly once. With only 30 seconds to decide between three options, dozens of contestants found themselves caught out.

The question that caught out 23 players

Saturday night’s episode saw 100 contestants attempting to survive a series of increasingly difficult questions, with the ultimate aim of reaching the 1% question and competing for a share of the jackpot.

The trouble came during the 45% question.

Host Lee Mack asked:

“Including the word ‘and’, what is the only number out of the numbers below that uses every vowel exactly once when spelt out?”

The three choices were:

• 107
• 206
• 305

At first glance, the question appeared straightforward. But contestants had to spell out each number, remember to include the word and, and then check the vowels carefully.

Lee added to the pressure with a joke as the 30-second countdown began:

“Take as long as you need… as long as the time you need is 30 seconds.”

The correct answer was 206. Written out as two hundred and six, it contains each of the five vowels, A, E, I, O and U, exactly once.

For 23 contestants, however, the answer proved elusive.

All 23 were eliminated at that stage, ending their chance to progress towards the final question and compete for a share of the jackpot.

Another puzzle causes more casualties

The contestants who survived the 45% question still had plenty of difficult challenges ahead.

Later in the episode, the 15% question presented another unusual puzzle, this time involving symbols rather than numbers.

Lee asked:

“Which of these groups of six symbols are in the same order whether you read them from left to right or from right to left?”

The strange-looking puzzle even prompted a joke from the host, who said:

“This is basically what we had to use before emojis.”

The correct answer was C.

The question proved costly once again, with eight more players eliminated.

They were knocked out just three questions away from the 1% question, ending their chance to compete for the jackpot.

The two puzzles demonstrated how quickly the field can shrink on The 1% Club. The show does not rely on conventional general-knowledge questions. Instead, contestants face problems built around logic, patterns, language and common sense.

In this episode, the 45% question reduced the number of players by 23 in one go, while the later 15% puzzle removed another eight.
