Kelly Clarkson Delivers A Powerful Cover Of Jelly Roll And Lainey Wilson’s “Save Me” — But Jelly Roll’s Emotional Reaction Stole The Spotlight
Kelly Clarkson has performed countless memorable covers, but her take on Jelly Roll and Lainey Wilson’s deeply personal hit “Save Me” struck a particularly emotional chord. Her powerhouse vocals brought a fresh intensity to the song, but it was Jelly Roll’s response that made the moment even more special. The country star admitted he was moved to tears after watching her performance.

Kelly Clarkson Puts Her Own Stamp On “Save Me”
Clarkson brought the emotional weight of “Save Me” to the forefront during a new edition of the popular Kellyoke segment on NBC’s The Kelly Clarkson Show.
Wearing a vintage The Police tour T-shirt paired with wide-leg jeans, she stepped up with her band, Y’all, and delivered a heartfelt rendition that balanced her signature vocal power with the vulnerability at the heart of the original.
She opened with the song’s haunting lyrics:
“Somebody save me, me from myself / I’ve spent so long living in Hell / They say my lifestyle is bad for my health / It’s the only thing that seems to help.”
As the performance continued, her backup singers joined in, adding another layer to the emotional delivery.
Clarkson also tackled the song’s difficult themes of drinking, smoking and the struggle to find something that offers relief when everything else feels broken.
Rather than simply imitate the original recording, she made the song her own while preserving the raw emotion that made it resonate with listeners.
Jelly Roll Reveals The Cover Left Him In Tears
While Clarkson’s performance was impressive on its own, Jelly Roll’s reaction quickly became one of the most touching parts of the story.
After discovering the cover, the singer took to social media to express just how much it meant to him.
“I would’ve never believed you if you would’ve told me that I’d write a song so impactful that incredible Kelly Clarkson would deem it worthy to cover,” he wrote.
He then shared an emotional admission that made his appreciation unmistakable:
“Thank you Kelly- wow – I’m honored in a way I can’t even describe – I cried watching it.”
For a songwriter whose music often draws from deeply personal struggles, hearing one of the most recognizable voices in music reinterpret his work clearly carried special significance.
“Save Me” Became A Major Career Milestone
The success of “Save Me” had already made it one of the defining songs in Jelly Roll’s career.
The track reached No. 1 on country radio in December 2023, marking Jelly Roll’s third chart-topper and Lainey Wilson’s fourth on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.
The song’s journey began with Jelly Roll’s solo recording, released on his 2020 album Self Medicated. That original version later received RIAA Platinum certification.
The collaboration with Wilson came afterward, following their surprise duet at the 58th Academy of Country Music Awards.
Their musical partnership continued beyond the recording studio, with joint performances at several major events, including:
- The Season 21 finale of American Idol.
- One of Jelly Roll’s packed headlining concerts in Austin, Texas, where he surprised the audience by bringing Wilson onstage.
Co-written by Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, and David Ray Stevens, “Save Me” tells the story of someone desperately seeking help to overcome addiction.
Its honest portrayal of personal struggles is a major part of what has connected the song with audiences.

Kelly Clarkson Has Been A Fan Of Lainey Wilson For Some Time
Clarkson’s performance of “Save Me” wasn’t her first time bringing one of Wilson’s songs to the Kellyoke stage.
She has previously covered “Watermelon Moonshine” and delivered an emotional rendition of “Heart Like A Truck” during her Las Vegas residency.
Before performing the latter, Clarkson took a moment to explain just how much she admired the rising country star.
She admitted that her musical tastes had traditionally leaned toward the country music of the 1980s and 1990s, the era she grew up listening to. But Wilson had managed to capture her attention in a big way.
“This next song that we’re going to do is a country song and I love this artist and this is really hard for me to say, because not shaming any artist, but I tend to love like ’80s and ’90s country that’s just what I grew up on,” Clarkson told the audience.
She went on to reveal how she first became familiar with Wilson after having her as a guest on her show.
“I’m in love with her, I think she’s so cool and I am obsessed…”
Clarkson even recalled spending the summer at her ranch in Montana listening to Wilson’s album nonstop.
“I love not just the song… I’m sorry I’m old, I mean the whole album. I love this entire album and this was probably her biggest hit from that album so far. I really relate to it.”
Kellyoke Continues To Deliver Memorable Musical Moments
Over the years, Clarkson’s Kellyoke performances have become a popular feature of The Kelly Clarkson Show, giving her the opportunity to reinterpret songs from across different genres.
Her cover selections have included music from Blake Shelton, Brooks & Dunn, Faith Hill and numerous other artists.
But her rendition of “Save Me” stood out for the emotional connection it created between the performer and the songwriter.
Clarkson brought her unmistakable voice to a song about personal struggles, while Jelly Roll’s heartfelt response showed just how meaningful it can be when another artist connects with a piece of music on such a personal level.
