Riley Green Faces One Of His Toughest Decisions Yet After Two Singers Deliver A Standout ‘The Voice’ Battle
Riley Green had a difficult choice to make on The Voice after two of his most promising contestants delivered a performance that left the coaches impressed. Their emotional rendition of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” made it clear why Green was reluctant to send either singer home.
During Monday’s episode on October 19, the country singer paired 15-year-old Allie Rae with 19-year-old Harmony McKee for a Battle Round that quickly became one of his favorite performances of the season. But when it came time to choose which artist would advance, Green admitted he had been dreading the decision.

How Allie Rae And Harmony McKee Joined Team Riley
As a first-time coach on Season 30, Green has been learning just how difficult it can be to choose between talented singers. His latest Battle put that challenge into sharp focus.
Allie Rae first caught his attention during the Blind Auditions with her rendition of Alannah Myles’ “Black Velvet.” Green turned his chair almost immediately, followed by Kelly Clarkson and Queen Latifah.
However, Green had a decisive advantage. He used his “First In” button, which overrode the other coaches and automatically secured the 15-year-old singer a place on his team.
Harmony McKee, 19, took a different musical route during her audition. Although country music is not her usual genre, she performed Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder & Lead,” earning chair turns from both Green and Adam Levine. She ultimately chose to join Team Riley.
With both singers on his roster, Green eventually had to pair them against each other in the Battle Rounds.
Their Rendition Of ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ Left The Coaches Impressed
For their head-to-head performance, Allie Rae and Harmony took on Bill Withers’ classic “Ain’t No Sunshine,” delivering a haunting rendition that allowed both voices to shine.
Each singer had opportunities to demonstrate her vocal range, but some of the strongest moments came when they sang together. Their harmonies complemented one another beautifully, creating a performance that earned a standing ovation from Green.
The impressive duet left the coach facing an unenviable task: deciding which of the two talented singers deserved to continue in the competition.
Kelly Clarkson And Adam Levine Both Leaned Toward Allie Rae
Kelly Clarkson was the first coach to offer her thoughts after the performance, and she had plenty of praise for both contestants.
Addressing Harmony, Clarkson said, “You have the most beautiful resonance. It’s such a beautiful gift you have.”
She then turned her attention to Allie Rae, praising the teenager’s distinctive approach to singing.
“For 15 years old, you have a really rad style,” Clarkson said.
Although she appreciated what both singers had brought to the stage, Clarkson told Green that she would lean toward choosing Allie Rae as the winner.
Adam Levine reached the same conclusion. He praised the performance but said he would also have selected Allie Rae if he had been making the decision.
Queen Latifah, meanwhile, highlighted different strengths in each contestant. She admired Allie Rae’s gorgeous high notes while also recognizing Harmony’s vocal stamina. However, she stopped short of revealing which singer she would have chosen.
With two coaches leaning toward Allie Rae and another acknowledging the strengths of both performers, the decision ultimately rested with Green.
Riley Green Admits He Was Dreading The Decision
When Green finally addressed his singers, he made no secret of how difficult the choice would be.
“This is one that I’ve both been looking forward to quite a bit, and also dreading a little bit,” he admitted.
He began by explaining what made Allie Rae stand out, emphasizing that her talent was remarkable regardless of her age.
“You’re a huge talent for any age, but I think that there’s something so interesting about your voice and how you present certain notes and how you pocket things. I think you’ve got a really great future,” Green told her.
His praise for Harmony was equally strong. He described the 19-year-old as “one of the most talented vocalists on the show” and noted how her voice had “completely filled the room.”
Green also called Harmony’s performance “awesome,” making it clear that his eventual choice would not reflect a lack of admiration for her abilities.
The coach then explained why the decision felt particularly difficult. In his eyes, the two singers had delivered performances so closely matched that neither had established a clear advantage.
He described the contest as “completely neck-and-neck.”
Nevertheless, Green could only send one artist forward. After weighing their performances, he named Allie Rae the winner of the Battle.
Why Green Chose Allie Rae To Move Forward
Speaking in an interview after the performance, Green reflected on the duet and revealed just how highly he regarded it.
He called it “one of my favorite battles,” a strong endorsement given how much the performance had challenged him as a coach.
When asked to explain his decision, Green pointed to the faith he had placed in Allie Rae from the beginning of the competition.
“She’s who I used my ‘First In’ on, I believed in her from the get-go. And I think she’s got a really great chance to go a long way on the show,” he explained.
His decision was therefore about more than one difficult Battle. Green had recognized Allie Rae’s potential during her Blind Audition, and he remained confident that she could continue developing as the competition progressed.
Clarkson also appeared convinced that the teenager had what it takes to go far. After the singers left the stage, she reinforced her earlier assessment by telling Green, “That little girl, she could win.”
For Allie Rae, the victory means another opportunity to demonstrate her abilities on The Voice. For Harmony McKee, the result marks the end of her time on Green’s team, despite receiving considerable praise from the coaches for her performance.
The Battle showcased two very different vocalists who managed to complement each other on one of Bill Withers’ best-known songs. And although Green ultimately stood by the young singer he had chosen first, his hesitation made clear just how much he valued both contestants.
