George Jones, a country music legend, passed away on April 26, 2013, at the age of 81, after being hospitalized for a high fever and irregular blood pressure. In the wake of his passing, the biggest stars in country music gathered to pay tribute to Jones’ life and legacy.

The three-hour service included performances by Alan Jackson, Kid Rock, and Montgomery Gentry, but Gill’s emotional rendition touched the hearts of those in attendance the most.

Honoring his dear friend, Vince Gill struggled to hold back tears as he sang “Go Rest High On That Mountain” at the Grand Ole Opry for the funeral on May 2, 2013.

On stage with Patty Loveless, Vince Gill’s sorrow was palpable as he often paused to wipe his eyes during his performance. Loveless comforted the grieving country star, who was deeply affected by his friend’s passing.

Gill’s delivery of “Go Rest High On That Mountain” was raw and heartfelt, each word echoing his pain. As he reached the second chorus, overwhelmed by emotion, Loveless stepped in to sing, giving Gill time to regain his composure.

Many people around the world were moved by this performance. One commented, “Lost a close friend and stood up to praise him. Emotions were high and Patty stepped in to help a man in pain.”

Some applaused Patty Loveless who carried the song when Vince struggles. Then, when he regained his composure at the end, she stepped back and let him finish on his own.
