20 CONTESTANTS WIPED OUT BY THE 1% CLUB’S ‘WORST EVER’ QUESTION — THE MUG PUZZLE THAT LEFT VIEWERS FUMING

It looked like a simple question about four mugs. Then 20 contestants got it wrong.
The latest episode of The 1% Club left both players and viewers at home scratching their heads after host Lee Mack delivered a deceptively tricky puzzle that quickly became one of the most talked-about questions of the night.
The 30% question asked:
“Whose mug belongs on the top shelf with the others?”
Contestants were given four possible answers — ALF, SUE, MEG and BEN — while four mugs on the top row displayed the words HAT, LOG, OLD and ROW.
At first glance, there appeared to be several possible ways to approach it.
For some contestants, there was simply no way in.
One viewer admitted: “Boo, I’m out! Still going to see if can get rest right on the TV.”
Another was even more frustrated, writing: “I’m sorry, but that was a daft question.”

A third joked: “Oh man, I feel like such a mug for not getting this yet aced the 15% one. What is wrong with me?!”
And the criticism kept coming.
One fan called it “the most annoying question of the evening,” while another went even further, branding it the “worst question the show has ever had.”
Someone else simply admitted: “I don’t get it.”
But there was a hidden detail on the mugs that changed everything.
THE CLUE WAS HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT

The key was not the words themselves.
It was the handles.
Lee explained that the handles of the mugs formed the shape of a C.
That meant the four words on the top row could actually become:
- CHAT
- CLOG
- COLD
- CROW
And suddenly, the four possible answers had to be tested in a completely different way.
Only one worked.
The correct answer was ALF.
By placing the letter C in front of ALF, contestants could make CALF, completing the same pattern.
It was the kind of detail that was almost impossible to spot once the clock was running — and it proved costly.

20 PLAYERS CRASHED OUT
The question was worth 30%, but the difficulty clearly caught a huge number of contestants off guard.
Twenty people got the question wrong, while another 18 contestants used their passes to avoid answering it.
When the result was revealed, Lee could only react with:
“Wow. We lost 20 people on that one. Well done if you got the answer.”
But viewers were far from united over whether the puzzle was clever or simply infuriating.
One fan wrote: “Ugh! Worst performance ever from me. #The1PercentClub See you next week when I do better, I hope.”
Another admitted they felt they could have answered every question — apart from this one.
“For the first time ever, I would have got every question right on #The1PercentClub… if it hadn’t been for that stupid cup question,” they raged.
Another viewer was baffled that they had missed the mug puzzle but immediately spotted a later question.
“This show is mad. Didn’t get the mug question, yet 25% jumped straight out at me.”
And one contestant at home even proposed a completely different theory, suggesting the answer should have been Sue because the mugs appeared to follow an alphabetical pattern.
But the official answer remained ALF.
THE QUESTION THAT DIVIDED VIEWERS
That may be exactly what made the puzzle so frustrating.
The answer was sitting there in the design of the mugs, but contestants had to notice that the handles themselves were part of the question.
With only 30 seconds to think, one tiny visual detail was enough to separate those who saw the pattern from the 20 who were sent crashing out.
And for many viewers, the biggest mystery wasn’t simply how they got it wrong — it was how such a seemingly simple mug puzzle managed to cause so much chaos.
Twenty contestants had the same 30 seconds.
Only some spotted what the C-shaped handles were really telling them.
