Only Connect Viewers Said Victoria Coren Mitchell Went ‘Too Far’ With Her Closing Joke — One Michael Portillo Punchline Left Fans ‘Traumatised’

Only Connect viewers are accustomed to Victoria Coren Mitchell ending episodes with a joke.
But one particularly cheeky sign-off left some fans wondering whether the host had finally pushed things a little too far.
After another typically brain-bending instalment of the BBC Two quiz, Victoria began what initially sounded like an innocent story about celebrities looking after birds.
Seconds later, she brought former politician and broadcaster Michael Portillo into the punchline — and viewers immediately understood the double meaning.
Some were laughing.
Others claimed they wished they could unhear it.
Victoria Started With an Apparently Innocent Bird Story
Coren Mitchell regularly opens and closes Only Connect with unusual anecdotes, jokes and deliberately elaborate setups.
This time, she told viewers about a fictional BBC Two programme supposedly sponsored by the RSPB, in which celebrities cared for birds before handing them to other famous presenters.
“I have so enjoyed watching the big names of BBC Two passing their feathered dependence onto other presenters that I have decided to join in myself,” she said.
So far, everything sounded harmless.
Her final line changed that.
Victoria announced that she would be “eagerly taking several swallows from Michael Portillo.”
She immediately followed it with a simple:
“Good night.”
Viewers Couldn’t Believe What They Had Heard

The innuendo didn’t take long to register.
Fans headed to social media after the episode, with several admitting that Victoria’s parting shot had caught them completely off guard.
“Eww @VictoriaCoren I can’t unhear that Portillo gag at the end of Only Connect,” one viewer wrote.
Another described themselves as “somewhat traumatised” by the closing remark.
One simply told Victoria: “You took it too far.”
Another viewer admitted they had “full on choked” after hearing the line because they hadn’t expected anything quite so suggestive at the end of the quiz.
Other Fans Thought It Was Brilliant

Not everybody wanted Victoria to tone things down.
Some viewers thought the joke was exactly the kind of cheeky British innuendo that made her closing monologues so entertaining.
One described it as “pretty near the knuckle” while arguing that innuendo was simply part of being British.
Another called the joke “bloody brilliant.”
“The was close to the knuckle Victoria!” the viewer wrote, before adding: “Best line on TV since…. your last one!”
Coren Mitchell has referenced Portillo in jokes on the programme before, but this particular punchline clearly caught even seasoned Only Connect viewers by surprise.
There Was Still a Quiz to Decide

Before Victoria’s closing joke stole the conversation, the episode had seen the Uisge Beathas take on the Crunchers.
The Crunchers ultimately emerged victorious, keeping themselves in contention in the series.
Yet once the questions were finished, it wasn’t one of the show’s notoriously difficult connections that had viewers rushing to social media.
Victoria needed only one sentence about Michael Portillo to leave some fans laughing, others horrified and more than a few wondering how she had managed to get that particular joke onto BBC Two.
