Florence Pugh Transforms Into Cathy Ames as Netflix Unveils First Look at East of Eden

Florence Pugh is taking on one of literature’s most memorable characters in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden — and the first images have already left viewers eager to see more.

Netflix has released an early look at Pugh as Cathy Ames in the seven-part period drama, while confirming that the series will arrive on the streaming platform on October 1.

The newly released images quickly attracted attention online, with fans describing Pugh as “absolutely captivating” and praising her casting before the series has even premiered.

Netflix takes on a Steinbeck classic

East of Eden is based on Steinbeck’s celebrated novel, a sprawling family saga exploring multiple generations and two interconnected families.

Steinbeck, also known for classics including The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men, incorporated elements of his own family history into the story. One of the families was reportedly inspired by the real-life family of his maternal grandfather, Samuel Hamilton, while Steinbeck himself appears as a minor character later in the novel.

According to Netflix’s early synopsis, the new adaptation will explore the multigenerational story of the Trask family while placing renewed emphasis on the novel’s unforgettable antihero, Cathy Ames.

Pugh takes on the role of Cathy, whose life becomes deeply entangled with generations of Trask men, particularly Adam and Charles, as the story explores a darker vision of the California dream.

Zoe Kazan brings a personal connection to East of Eden

The adaptation is being developed by Zoe Kazan, whose connection to Steinbeck’s novel stretches back generations.

Kazan began her career as an actress, appearing in projects including The Big Sick and Olive Kitteridge. Her grandfather was acclaimed filmmaker Elia Kazan, who won Academy Awards for directing Gentleman’s Agreement and On the Waterfront, the latter starring Marlon Brando.

Elia Kazan also directed the famous 1955 film adaptation of East of Eden, starring James Dean.

His version, however, concentrated on only part of Steinbeck’s expansive novel. By developing the new adaptation as a seven-part series, Zoe Kazan hopes to explore substantially more of the original story and its characters.

“What I felt was the whole epic story is an opportunity to explore, to fall in love with all these characters,” she told Netflix’s Tudum.

Kazan has made no secret of her enthusiasm for Pugh in the central role, revealing that she did not have another actress in mind who she believed could portray Cathy equally well.

“She is the exact right person to play Cathy,” Kazan said, before offering particularly high praise for the actress: “I don’t use this word lightly: I think she’s a genius.”

Pugh stars alongside Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask and Mike Faist as Charles Trask.

First-look images ignite excitement among fans

The initial photographs of Pugh in character have already generated strong reactions from viewers.

One fan praised the intensity she brings to her roles, writing: “Florence really knows how to make every character feel so intense… I’m seated for this one.”

Another joked: “If Florence can turn a Steinbeck classic into a binge-worthy drama I’m ready to trade my apple for popcorn.”

Others focused specifically on her transformation into Cathy Ames, with one viewer declaring the casting “perfect” and saying Pugh’s expression already carried the character’s sense of menace.

Fans of Steinbeck’s novel were equally enthusiastic. One described East of Eden as one of their favorite books, while another said Pugh already looked “absolutely captivating” and predicted the adaptation could become one of the year’s most anticipated limited series.

With a celebrated novel as its foundation, a seven-episode format offering room to explore its multigenerational story and Pugh at the center as Cathy Ames, Netflix’s new interpretation will soon have the chance to meet those expectations.

East of Eden begins streaming on Netflix on October 1.
