I Came Home Early for My Son’s First Birthday… Then I Found My Wife Crying in the Kitchen While My Mother Stole Everything I Had Left Behind

I knew something was wrong before I even reached my front door.

Cars were parked along both sides of our quiet street. Music rattled the windows, laughter echoed from my backyard, and smoke from two barbecue grills drifted over the fence.

For one hopeful second, I smiled.

I thought Evelyn had planned a surprise birthday party for Jamie’s first birthday.

Then I looked closer.

There were no balloons with my son’s name.

No high chair decorated for him.

No children’s music.

No toys scattered across the lawn.

Instead, nearly twenty members of my mother’s family were eating barbecue, drinking beer from coolers I had bought, and laughing like they owned the place.

My cousin Trent was wearing my apron while flipping burgers.

My aunt Marlene carried serving trays from my kitchen.

And my mother…

She was sitting beneath the patio umbrella in the chair I had bought for Evelyn after Jamie was born, smiling like the queen of a house that belonged to her.

No one even noticed me.

I walked through the side gate carrying Jamie’s birthday cake, his presents, and the silver keepsake Evelyn and I had picked out months ago.

Then I heard something shatter inside the house.

I set everything down and hurried through the back door.

The kitchen looked like a disaster.

Dirty dishes covered every counter. Grease stained the floor. Pots overflowed from the sink.

Standing in the middle of it all was my wife.

She was wearing an old gray sweatshirt and stained sweatpants.

She was scrubbing dishes while tears silently rolled down her face.

For a second, I barely recognized her.

She had lost so much weight.

Dark circles surrounded her eyes.

Her hands were raw and cracked from detergent.

“Evelyn?”

She froze.

A plate slipped from her hands and exploded across the floor.

When she turned toward me, relief flashed across her face…

Only to disappear almost immediately.

“Colin…” she whispered.

“You weren’t supposed to come home until Sunday.”

I frowned.

“Where’s Jamie?”

She looked toward the staircase.

“Upstairs.”

“Why?”

“He has a fever.”

My stomach dropped.

“How high?”

“One hundred and three.”

I dropped the gift bag without even noticing.

“What?”

“He had it about an hour ago.”

“Why didn’t you take him to urgent care?”

Instead of answering me, Evelyn glanced nervously toward the backyard.

Then she spoke so quietly I almost didn’t hear her.

“Your mother wouldn’t let me leave until I finished washing everyone’s dishes.”

I stared at her.

“I’m sorry…”

“What did you just say?”

“Please don’t get angry.”

That sentence scared me more than anything else.

Evelyn had always hated arguments…

But she had never been afraid of me.

Now she looked terrified before I’d even raised my voice.

I stepped closer.

“Why would my mother think she has the right to stop you from taking our son to a doctor?”

Before Evelyn could answer, I heard my mother’s voice behind me.

“Colin?”

She walked into the kitchen carrying an empty pitcher as though nothing were wrong.

For a moment she looked surprised to see me.

Then she smiled.

“Oh dear… you ruined the surprise.”

I looked at her in disbelief.

“What surprise?”

“Jamie’s birthday celebration.”

I looked through the window toward the backyard.

“My son is upstairs burning with a 103-degree fever while everyone outside is eating barbecue.”

My mother’s smile barely changed.

“He was getting fussy, so I told Evelyn to put him down for a nap.”

“He needs a doctor.”

“Babies get fevers.”

“And Evelyn says you refused to let her leave the house.”

She sighed dramatically.

“She’s been emotional lately.”

I didn’t answer.

I ran upstairs two steps at a time.

The moment I opened Jamie’s bedroom door, hot, stale air hit my face.

The curtains were closed.

The air-conditioning vent had been shut.

My little boy lay in his crib wearing nothing but a diaper.

His cheeks were bright red.

His hair was soaked with sweat.

When I picked him up, his tiny body burned against my chest.

“Daddy’s here…”

He barely opened his eyes before resting his head on my shoulder.

That was the moment something inside me broke.

I carried my son downstairs…

And I already knew nothing in this house would ever be the same again.
