Lady Eliza Spencer Breaks Her Silence on Prince Harry’s UK Return: “It’s Exciting!”

Prince Harry's family member has 2-word reaction to the royal's shocking UK return

Lady Eliza Spencer has shared her reaction to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to return to the United Kingdom, offering a warm response as her cousin prepares to spend more time in the country he once called home.

When asked about the surprising news on Wednesday, the 34-year-old gave a short but enthusiastic answer. “It’s exciting!” Eliza told the Mirror UK.

The comment is particularly notable because Eliza is part of Harry’s extended family through his late mother, Princess Diana. She is the daughter of Charles Spencer, Diana’s younger brother, making her and Harry first cousins.

Eliza also made it clear that the family would like to see more of Harry, Meghan and their children now that the Sussexes are back in Britain. “We would love to be able to find some time to visit,” she said.

Her reaction comes as Harry and Meghan begin a new chapter in their relationship with the UK after years of living primarily in the United States.

Harry and Meghan left Britain in 2020 after stepping back from their roles as senior working royals. They subsequently established their main home in California, where they have lived with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Six years later, their decision to return has inevitably attracted considerable attention, particularly because Harry’s relationship with Britain and members of the royal family has remained a subject of public interest.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived in Birmingham on Wednesday with Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5.

The family traveled from Los Angeles on a private jet and, at the time of the report, had yet to make a public appearance following their arrival.

Their return is not being described as a restoration of their former royal roles. Harry and Meghan are expected to remain non-working royals and continue their business activities while living in a private, non-royal residence.

The couple also continue to own their Montecito, California, home, meaning their move back to Britain does not necessarily represent a complete departure from their life in the United States.

Instead, the development appears to mark a significant change in how much time the Sussexes may spend in Harry’s home country.

For members of Harry’s extended family, that could mean more opportunities for personal contact.

And Eliza’s response suggests that at least some relatives are enthusiastic about the possibility.

A Family Connection That Goes Back to Princess Diana

Eliza’s connection to Harry comes through one of the most recognizable branches of the Spencer family.

Her father, Charles Spencer, is the younger brother of Princess Diana. Diana’s marriage to then-Prince Charles placed the Spencer family firmly in the public eye, and her sons, William and Harry, have remained closely associated with the Spencer side of their family throughout their lives.

That makes Eliza part of a family network that has continued to attract attention decades after Diana’s death. Prince William's door is 'bolted shut' as Prince Harry plans UK return with Meghan Markle, children: expert

Her comments about Harry’s return were nevertheless straightforward and personal rather than political.

Rather than discussing royal duties or speculation surrounding the monarchy, she simply expressed happiness at the prospect of being able to see her cousin again.

“We would love to be able to find some time to visit,” she said.

Harry Had Already Been Thinking About Life in Britain

Interestingly, Harry had appeared to hint at his continuing interest in Britain well before news of the couple’s return emerged.

In September 2025, the Duke of Sussex spoke with singer Joss Stone at the WellChild Awards in London. Stone had recently moved back to the UK from Tennessee, and their conversation reportedly turned toward life in Britain.

Stone later recalled that Harry asked how she and her family were settling back into the country. She described him as “genuinely interested” in the subject and said that he spoke about the quality of British schools and the importance of community for children.

Stone even suggested that Harry might eventually return to Britain. “Maybe Harry will move back too,” she recalled saying.

At the time, there was no public confirmation that Harry and Meghan were preparing to relocate. In hindsight, however, the conversation has taken on greater significance following the couple’s latest decision.

A Different Kind of Return

Harry’s latest move is also different from the circumstances surrounding his departure six years ago.

When Harry and Meghan stepped away from royal duties in 2020, the decision represented a major turning point for the couple. They eventually settled in Montecito, California, where they built a private family life away from the daily demands of the British royal institution.

Their return does not mean that they are resuming those duties.

Instead, the Sussexes are expected to continue working on their own business and media projects while living independently from the royal family.

That distinction is important. Harry may be returning to Britain, but he is not returning as a working member of the monarchy.

Still, being physically closer to his British relatives could potentially make family connections easier to maintain.

For Eliza Spencer, that possibility appears to be something worth celebrating.

The Charles III Factor

The decision to return has also been linked to Harry’s relationship with his father, King Charles III.

An insider previously claimed that the monarch was a major reason behind the couple’s decision to return to Britain. Charles, 77, has been undergoing treatment following his cancer diagnosis, which was publicly announced in 2024.

According to the report, the King is said to be looking forward to spending more time with his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren.

While the Sussexes’ relationship with other members of the royal family has been the subject of years of speculation, Harry’s connection with his father remains an important part of the story surrounding his return.

The possibility of spending more time with Archie and Lilibet may also give Harry an opportunity to reconnect with relatives in Britain in a way that has been more difficult while living thousands of miles away in California.

For now, Harry and Meghan’s family life remains split between two countries.

The couple continue to own their $14.5 million Montecito mansion, where they have lived since leaving Britain. Their decision to return to the UK therefore does not appear to mean that their American chapter is coming to an end.

Instead, they are expected to maintain their business interests while establishing a private base in Britain.

The family’s arrival in Birmingham marks the beginning of this new stage, but there has yet to be a major public appearance from all four members following their arrival.

That means attention is now focused on what happens next — including whether Harry will spend more time with members of the Spencer family and whether Eliza will get the chance to make the visit she has already said the family would like to arrange.

For now, her reaction remains one of the clearest indications from Harry’s extended family.

“It’s exciting!”

After years of distance between Harry and his former home, his return has once again brought him closer to the family connections he left behind — and Lady Eliza Spencer appears ready to make the most of having her cousin back in Britain.
