Balmoral Castle has clarified that its summer shutdown does not mean the entire estate has been closed to visitors.

The royal residence took to Instagram to confirm that while much of the estate has stopped welcoming the public ahead of King Charles III’s annual Scottish retreat, the Main Gate Gift Shop and Terrace Café remain open daily from 10am to 4pm throughout August and September.

The update follows an earlier announcement confirming that the estate’s main grounds, gardens, restaurant and exhibitions had closed to visitors earlier this week.

Despite the wider closure, visitors travelling through Royal Deeside can still call at the estate’s main entrance.

The Terrace Café is currently serving a selection of burgers, ciabattas, soup and bacon rolls, alongside cakes and other sweet treats. Meanwhile, the gift shop remains open for those wanting to browse its selection of souvenirs and other items.

Balmoral invited people visiting the area to stop by, browse the shop and enjoy refreshments at the castle gates.

The limited opening provides visitors with an opportunity to experience part of the estate even while the main attractions remain closed.

Since inheriting Balmoral from his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles has introduced a notable change to the way the Scottish residence is opened to visitors.

The King made the unprecedented decision to allow paying guests inside the castle itself.

The initiative proved extremely popular when it launched in 2024, with tours selling out and subsequently continuing in later years.

During the public opening period, visitors are allowed into five rooms inside the historic residence: the Entrance Hall, Red Corridor, Library, Family Dining Room and Drawing Room.

These are not simply preserved exhibition spaces. They remain rooms used by members of the Royal Family.

The Library is particularly significant, as it serves as the King’s personal study when he is staying at Balmoral.

Balmoral’s social media accounts initially announced the seasonal closure on August 9, thanking the thousands of visitors who had explored the estate during the 2026 season.

The estate also confirmed that the Exclusively Highlands Artisan Market will return on November 6, 7 and 8.

Meanwhile, King Charles has already begun his Scottish stay. He is currently at the Castle of Mey before travelling to Balmoral in the coming days.

Once at the Aberdeenshire estate, the King and Queen Camilla are expected to welcome other members of the Royal Family, who traditionally spend several weeks there during the summer away from their usual public duties.

A royal tradition dating back to Queen Victoria

The annual Highland retreat has been part of royal life for generations.

The tradition dates back to the reign of Queen Victoria, when her husband, Prince Albert, purchased Balmoral Castle and the surrounding 7,000 acres in 1845.

Over time, the estate became one of the monarchy’s most cherished private retreats.

Located beside the River Dee in Aberdeenshire, the wider Balmoral estate covers around 50,000 acres and has long provided generations of royals with a place to escape the demands of public life.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams previously told GB News that Balmoral remains especially important to the Royal Family because it gives them the opportunity to enjoy privacy.

For now, much of the estate may be closed to the public, but Balmoral’s latest clarification makes clear that visitors can still make a stop at its gates during August and September.
