BBC’s ‘Thrilling’ New Five-Part Crime Drama Could Be Your Next Weekend Obsession — With Buried Secrets, Shifting Suspicions And A Mystery Designed To Keep You Watching Until The Truth Finally Breaks

Sheridan Smith’s New Five-Part BBC Crime Thriller Throws Two Ordinary Workers Into a Deadly Gangster Nightmare

Sheridan Smith is heading back to BBC One with a dark new crime drama that turns one desperate decision into a dangerous fight for survival.

The five-part thriller The Cage pairs Smith with Michael Socha as two casino workers secretly stealing from the same safe — without initially realising the other is doing exactly the same thing.

But keeping the money hidden soon becomes the least of their problems.

Their increasingly reckless scheme puts them directly in the path of local gangsters and the police, leaving both characters trapped in a situation where one wrong move could bring everything crashing down.

The Responder Creator Is Behind the Drama

There is another reason crime fans may want this one on their radar.

The Cage comes from Tony Schumacher, the BAFTA-winning creator behind The Responder and a former Merseyside Police officer.

The series is also produced by Element Pictures, the award-winning company behind Normal People and Poor Things.

Filmed around Liverpool and Merseyside, the drama places its story inside an inner-city casino where Smith’s character, Leanne, works as a cashier.

Leanne is a single mother facing the possibility of losing her family home.

Desperate for a way out, she begins secretly taking money from the casino safe.

And that’s when she discovers her boss has been doing the same thing.

Two Thieves, One Safe and a Very Dangerous Secret

Michael Socha plays Matty in the Liverpool-set series

Michael Socha plays Matty, Leanne’s boss and a gambling addict struggling with his own demons.

Once Leanne discovers his theft, their futures become inseparable.

Rather than exposing one another, the pair form an unlikely partnership and attempt to keep the missing money secret.

According to the official synopsis, their actions put them on a collision course with each other, the local gangster whose money they’re stealing and the police.

As the pressure builds, Leanne’s loyalties are pulled in competing directions while Matty’s personal problems threaten their already fragile plan.

Their survival depends on playing every hand perfectly.

Geraldine James plays Nancy Packer

Unfortunately, Sheridan Smith has already suggested that neither character is particularly gifted at being a criminal.

“They’re not great at stealing,” she explained during an appearance on This Morning.

Smith described Leanne as the more organised of the pair, while Matty is considerably less reliable.

“It’s a lot of fun, but it’s also a very heavy story,” she added.

Sheridan Smith Leads a Familiar Cast

Smith and Socha are surrounded by an extensive ensemble of recognisable British television faces.

Barry Sloane appears as Gary, while Geraldine James plays Nancy.

Anton Bibby stars as Thomas, Freya Jones as Emily and Sophie Mensah joins the cast as Fen.

The supporting cast also includes Abby Mavers as Kelly, Shaun Mason as Alan, Louis Emerick as Paul, Ian Puleston Davies as Vincent and Julia Papp as Irina.

Katy Carmichael plays DCI Hannigan, while Dave Hart, Eileen O’Brien, Eithne Browne and Mona Goodwin also feature.

All Five Episodes Will Be Ready to Stream

Viewers won’t have to spend five weeks waiting to discover how Leanne and Matty’s increasingly dangerous predicament ends.

The Cage premieres on BBC One at 9pm on Sunday, April 26, 2026, with episodes airing weekly on television.

However, all five episodes will become available on BBC iPlayer from the premiere date, allowing viewers to binge the entire story immediately.

The newly released trailer offers the first substantial glimpse at how quickly Leanne and Matty’s relatively simple theft begins spiralling into something much darker.

They may have started by quietly skimming cash from a casino safe.

Sophie Mensah plays Amanda Ning

But with gangsters closing in, police involved and trust between the unlikely partners being pushed to its limits, getting the money could prove considerably easier than surviving what comes next.
