ITV’s The 1% Club, hosted by Lee Mack, has got fans in a bit of a twist as they’ve swarmed to Reddit to accuse the show’s bosses of pulling off a “sneaky” trick.
All the questions posed to the show’s contestants are sourced from a pool previously answered by members of the public.
These brain-teasers are ranked by how many people got then right with the real stinkers being those that only a smidgen worked out. At the start of the show, each of the 100 contestants is given a £1,000 stake to play with.
As the game unfolds, Lee Mack fires off 15 questions of escalating difficulty, ranging from the relatively easy (90%) to the mind-bendingly tough (1%).
Contestants have just 30 seconds to lock in their answers using their mobile phones or tablets. If they stumble on a question, they’re out of the game, with their stake contributing to a growing final prize pot.
However, one viewer noted that the audience was not given the full 30 seconds to answer for the first three questions, reports the Express. On Reddit one fan of the quiz show vented: “The crew decided to cut a few seconds short on the 90% to 70% question.”
Pinging back, another telly fan posted: “I didn’t notice it, but if they really wanted to cut length out of the show, there are better ways. They don’t need to keep saying what’s in the prize pot after every question.
“It’s always going to be around the same amount near the end, and I don’t think the viewers are interested, really. So cutting 10 seconds from a question seems odd.”
A third viewer pointed out: “They cut out about 3-4 seconds per question, but for a 30-second question, that is quite big that for a tricky 70% question that I might run out of time to think and submit the answer.”
Meanwhile, another said: “I’d prefer if they gave more information about the number of remaining contestants and how many have passed than what the prize pot is at!”.
The 1% Club saw one of its most dramatic cuts in player numbers with a single question on Saturday night when host Lee watched in astonishment as 14 contestants were sent packing on a 60% level question.
The brain-teaser was: “Which of these butterflies is exactly the same on both sides”. When Lee shared the correct answer, he couldn’t hide his shock, exclaiming: “Wow, we lost 14 of you there.”
In an extremely engrossing episode, viewers were left gobsmacked by an “impossible” final question that seemed to fox the majority, with some spectators declaring they wouldn’t crack it “in a million years.”
This formidable brain teaser saw three out of the four final ralliers flummoxed by the ultimate challenge, much to the astonishment of viewers biting their nails back home.
The tough question thrown at them was: “What is the lowest number to have the same value as ten times the number of letters in its name?”. While the contenders mulled over this puzzler, you could cut the tension with a knife as numerous participants grappled fruitlessly for the answer.
In a dazzling turn of events, Joshua snagged the win with his rapid response of “50”, bagging himself a cool £98,000. His method? Pure logic – he figured out that “fifty” has five letters and simply multiplied that by ten to get the answer.
The 1% Club airs Saturday on ITV and ITVX
