Lioness Season 3 Finale Brings Aaliyah Back With a Shocking Plan for Joe — Reopening Cruz’s Most Painful Chapter

Lioness closes its third season by reaching back to one of the most painful chapters in the show’s history — and revealing that a threat many viewers may have believed was long behind Cruz is suddenly very much alive.

Season 3 Episode 8, “The Unraveling,” initially appears to provide answers about the attacks on Joe McNamara. Instead, the finale exposes a larger scheme and brings Aaliyah back into the story, setting up a deeply personal conflict that connects directly to the events of Season 1.

Joe refuses to go home after her rescue

The finale picks up after Joe, played by Zoe Saldaña, was successfully rescued in the penultimate episode.

Despite everything she has endured — and the toll her work has continued to take on her family — Joe isn’t prepared to step away.

Rather than returning home, she chooses to remain in the field until she can get revenge on whoever was responsible for attacking her twice.

For a time, the team believes it has identified the person behind the operation.

Their double agent Oleksandra, played by Elizaveta Neretin, is determined to have been responsible for the attack.

Meanwhile, the team makes the calculated decision to release Yurimov and deliver him to the embassy, hoping that allowing him to go will eventually lead to useful intelligence.

Kyle, played by Thad Luckinbill, is given a more direct assignment.

He arrives at Oleksandra’s safehouse and kills her. Her body is subsequently discovered on a riverbank.

But eliminating Oleksandra doesn’t provide the clean resolution the team might have expected.

The story still doesn’t add up

More trouble follows when a shootout erupts at a Washington, D.C. bar.

The incident raises questions about the carelessness of some members of the QRF team, while the wider mystery remains unresolved.

Even with Oleksandra gone, there is still a sense that someone else is directing events from behind the scenes.

The possibility of a mole remains hanging over the operation, and the explanation for everything that has happened to Joe feels incomplete.

The finale eventually reveals why.

Aaliyah is revealed as the figure pulling the strings

The major twist comes when Aaliyah, played by Stephanie Nur, is revealed to be behind the larger operation.

Her target is Joe — and she has no intention of giving up her attempts to have her kidnapped.

The strategy behind the plan is equally significant.

If Aaliyah’s people can take Joe, the expectation is that the rest of the Lioness team will come after her.

That revelation transforms the events surrounding Joe into something much bigger than an isolated attack.

It also takes Lioness back to the relationship that defined much of its first season.

Aaliyah’s return brings Cruz’s past back with her

Aaliyah’s reappearance carries enormous implications for Cruz, played by Laysla De Oliveira.

During Season 1, Cruz infiltrated Aaliyah’s world as part of her mission. But the relationship between the two women became far more complicated when they fell in love.

Cruz was ultimately forced to choose between those feelings and her duty.

She betrayed Aaliyah and, while carrying out the U.S. government’s operation, killed both Aaliyah’s fiancé, Ehsan, played by Ray Corasani, and her father, Asim Amrohi, played by Bassem Youssef.

The experience left Cruz deeply hurt and struggling with what she had been required to do.

For some time, much of that pain was also directed toward Joe.

Cruz and Joe have spent two seasons repairing the damage

The relationship between Cruz and Joe has changed considerably since those events.

Across the following two seasons, Cruz has gradually moved beyond her resentment and come to forgive Joe.

Their bond has also deepened, something made particularly clear by their emotional reunion during the climax of Episode 7.

Just as Cruz appears to have reached a very different place emotionally, however, the person at the center of her original trauma has returned.

And Aaliyah’s plans may not stop with Joe.

Cruz and Josie could now be drawn into Aaliyah’s plan

With Aaliyah once again part of the story, Cruz becomes an obvious figure of interest because of everything that happened between them.

There is also the possibility that the consequences could extend to Cruz’s new love, Josie Carrillo, played by Genesis Rodriguez, as well as the wider QRF team.

The finale doesn’t reveal exactly how far Aaliyah intends to take her operation.

Instead, it leaves the characters facing a threat whose origins stretch all the way back to the beginning of the series.

Joe is currently the target, but capturing her could be only the first step in drawing the entire team into Aaliyah’s reach.

The finale leaves the door wide open for Season 4

Lioness has not officially been renewed for a fourth season.

But “The Unraveling” deliberately leaves its central conflict unresolved.

Aaliyah is back. Joe remains in danger. Questions surrounding the operation haven’t completely disappeared, and Cruz now has a past she believed she had survived potentially returning to threaten the life she has built since.

After two seasons spent watching Cruz recover from the consequences of her first mission, the Season 3 finale brings that story full circle.

The woman Cruz once loved — and ultimately betrayed in the name of duty — is back in the game.

And this time, Aaliyah appears to be the one deciding what happens next.
