David Suchet Goes From Detective to Murder Suspect in Ludwig Christmas Special as BritBox Unveils Star-Studded Locked-Room Mystery

Christmas is about to become considerably more dangerous for David Mitchell’s unlikely detective, with Ludwig heading to a remote Yorkshire hotel for a festive murder mystery featuring an irresistible piece of casting.

Sir David Suchet, famous for spending decades solving seemingly impossible crimes as Hercule Poirot, will appear in the upcoming Ludwig Christmas special — except this time he won’t be the detective.

He’ll be one of the suspects.

The hour-long BritBox special will strand John “Ludwig” Taylor and his family inside an isolated Christmas-themed hotel during a raging blizzard. When a blackout is followed by murder, Ludwig suddenly finds himself trapped with a killer and a collection of potential suspects.

And with nobody able to leave, the puzzle solver will have to determine which guest is responsible before the festive getaway becomes even more sinister.

A Christmas hotel becomes the scene of a locked-room mystery

The Taylors arrive at a remote Yorkshire hotel expecting a seasonal escape filled with all the traditional Christmas trimmings.

Instead, the weather quickly turns against them.

A violent blizzard cuts the hotel off from the outside world before a sudden blackout plunges the building into darkness.

Then someone is murdered.

With escape impossible and help unable to reach them, the guests are forced to remain inside for the night knowing the killer must still be somewhere in the hotel.

It gives Ludwig the perfect setting for a classic locked-room-style mystery: a limited group of suspects, an isolated location and a crime seemingly waiting for one brilliant mind to unravel it.

Fortunately, Ludwig happens to be there.

David Mitchell and the Taylor family are back

David Mitchell returns as John “Ludwig” Taylor, the puzzle-loving central character whose unusual mind makes him remarkably effective at solving crimes.

Anna Maxwell Martin is also returning as Lucy Betts-Taylor, alongside Dylan Hughes as Henry Betts-Taylor.

Dipo Ola will reprise his role as DCI Russell Carter.

But the Christmas episode significantly expands the cast with an impressive collection of guest stars.

Alongside Suchet are Jason Flemyng, Joe Wilkinson, Cathy Tyson, Alexandra Roach, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Rebekah Staton, Claire Price, Ariella Glaser and George Rainsford.

Exactly who their characters are — and which of them Ludwig should be most suspicious of — is being kept under wraps.

But one suspect is already guaranteed to delight murder-mystery fans.

David Suchet finally finds himself on the other side of the investigation

For viewers who associate Suchet almost exclusively with Hercule Poirot, his Ludwig appearance comes with a particularly entertaining twist.

After years of gathering suspects together and revealing the murderer himself, Suchet will finally get to sit back while somebody else delivers the denouement.

“It was an absolute pleasure to work alongside David Mitchell and the wonderful ensemble cast,” Suchet said.

“It made quite the refreshing change to be playing a suspect rather than the detective, and to sit comfortably in my armchair while David delivered the denouement.”

The actor added that he had “a thoroughly enjoyable time” making the episode.

It’s difficult to imagine casting better suited to a Christmas murder mystery.

Suchet became synonymous with Agatha Christie’s Belgian detective after portraying Poirot across decades of television, turning his performance into one of the most recognizable interpretations of the character.

Now viewers will get to watch another detective examine him instead.

David Mitchell calls working with Suchet a ‘dream come true’

The casting was just as exciting for Mitchell.

The comedian and actor revealed that he has been a longtime admirer of Suchet’s work — and a serious Poirot viewer.

“I have long been a huge admirer of Sir David Suchet’s work and have watched every episode of Poirot several times,” Mitchell said.

“So it was a dream come true for me when he agreed to appear in the Ludwig Christmas Special.”

Mitchell also praised his guest star personally, describing Suchet as “funny, interesting, and generous.”

He added that Suchet’s performance in the special is “wonderful.”

For fans familiar with both shows, watching Mitchell’s eccentric puzzle solver eventually explain the solution while Suchet sits among the suspects could become one of the episode’s most memorable moments.

The setup feels tailor-made for Ludwig

A snowbound hotel and a murderer hidden among the guests fits naturally with the kind of puzzle-based storytelling at the heart of Ludwig.

John Taylor isn’t a conventional detective.

His ability to recognize patterns and solve complex puzzles makes seemingly impossible crimes particularly suited to him.

The Christmas special appears ready to push that premise toward classic whodunit territory.

The raging blizzard creates isolation.

The blackout introduces uncertainty.

The Christmas episode won’t be the only new Ludwig viewers have to look forward to.

Season 2 will premiere on BritBox on October 13, with new episodes arriving weekly.

And the show’s future already extends beyond that run.

Season 3 is currently in production, ensuring David Mitchell’s reluctant detective will have considerably more mysteries ahead of him.

The Christmas special’s exact release date has not yet been announced.

But between its isolated Yorkshire setting, blizzard, locked-room murder and a guest list headed by one of television’s most celebrated fictional detectives, it already has the ingredients for an especially entertaining festive mystery.

For David Suchet, however, there will be one major adjustment.

This time, when everyone gathers to discover who committed the murder, Poirot won’t be standing in the middle of the room explaining the answer.

He’ll be waiting to find out whether Ludwig thinks he did it.
