BBC’s Beloved Jane Austen Drama Is Returning for a Three-Part Christmas Special After 7 Million Viewers Fell in Love With Its 98%-Rated First Season

One of the BBC’s most celebrated period dramas is returning this Christmas, bringing viewers back into the romantic world of Jane Austen with a new story about love, marriage and an unexpected visitor from the past.

The Other Bennet Sister will return for a three-part festive special following the enormous success of its first season, which attracted more than seven million viewers within its first 28 days.

The drama also achieved a remarkable 98% Rotten Tomatoes score and enjoyed a record-breaking launch on BritBox in the United States.

Now, newly released BBC photographs offer a first glimpse of what awaits Mary Bennet as she begins married life with Tom Hayward.

Mary Bennet’s Happy Ending Is Only the Beginning

Inspired by Janice Hadlow’s 2020 novel, The Other Bennet Sister reimagines the world of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice through the eyes of Mary, the frequently overlooked middle Bennet daughter.

Ella Bruccoleri returns as Mary alongside Dónal Finn as Tom Hayward.

The first season concluded with Mary accepting Tom’s marriage proposal, seemingly securing the romantic future she had long hoped to find.

But the Christmas special explores what happens after the wedding celebrations end and the realities of marriage begin.

As Mary adjusts to becoming Mrs Hayward, she must navigate a new identity and the responsibilities that accompany her changed circumstances.

Then an unexpected visitor from her past arrives seeking help, threatening to disrupt the peaceful beginning of her married life.

The BBC’s official synopsis suggests Mary’s next challenge will be about far more than settling into a new household.

Ruth Jones and Familiar Faces Return for the Festive Episodes

The newly released photographs confirm the return of several popular characters.

Ruth Jones reprises her role as Mrs Bennet, while Tanya Reynolds returns as Caroline Bingley and Laurie Davidson appears again as Mr Ryder.

Poppy Gilbert plays Lizzie Darcy, Maddie Close returns as Jane Bingley, Grace Hogg-Robinson reprises Lydia Wickham, and Molly Wright appears as Kitty Buncock.

The Christmas episodes will also introduce Nerys Amber Stocks as Lucy, the Haywards’ housekeeper.

Behind the scenes, original novelist Janice Hadlow has helped develop the new storylines, with returning screenwriter Sarah Quintrell writing the scripts.

Director Asim Abbasi also returns, maintaining continuity with the original production.

Filming has recently wrapped in Wales.

When Will The Other Bennet Sister Christmas Special Air?

The three-part special is scheduled to arrive during the 2026 Christmas television season, although the BBC has not yet confirmed an exact premiere date.

UK viewers will be able to watch the episodes on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, while audiences in the United States and Canada can follow the story on BritBox.

The first season, consisting of 10 episodes, remains available on BBC iPlayer.

With its richly detailed period setting, romantic storytelling and acclaimed performances, The Other Bennet Sister has established itself as a popular addition to the growing collection of Jane Austen-inspired television dramas.
