Only Connect: Victoria Coren Mitchell baffled by ‘ungettable’ question contestants somehow solved

Victoria Coren Mitchell was visibly stunned when contestants on Only Connect correctly solved a sequence she had already written off as virtually impossible.

The comedian and poker player, who has hosted the BBC quiz show since 2008, watched as Team The Jukeboxers worked their way through a particularly obscure set of clues on the 11 October episode. Their answer was correct — but it was one Coren Mitchell openly admitted she had expected nobody to find.

A sequence that seemed to make no sense

The challenge asked the teams to identify the fourth item in a sequence.

The first two clues were mathematical diagrams that represented 20 acres and 43 acres. The third clue was a picture of a combine harvester.

At first glance, the clues appeared to have little connection. But The Jukeboxers managed to link them to a familiar song by The Wurzels.

They correctly identified the final answer as a key.

The connection was to the band’s No. 1 hit “The Combine Harvester”, whose lyrics reference having 20 acres and 43 acres before mentioning a brand new combine harvester and giving someone “the key.”

The team had therefore connected all four clues through the lyrics of the song.

Victoria Coren Mitchell could hardly believe it

Rather than celebrating the question being solved, Coren Mitchell appeared genuinely baffled that the contestants had managed to reach the answer.

She described it as her “least favourite question in the whole series” and said she considered it “ungettable”, admitting that she had expected nobody to solve it.

Her frustration centred on the number of leaps required to make the connection.

She questioned why contestants would first interpret the measurements as acres when the clues appeared to involve square feet, how they could work out the relevant acreage in the first place, and then how those numbers could possibly lead them to the image of a combine harvester.

Even after identifying the machinery, she pointed out that contestants would still have to recognise it as a reference to The Wurzels’ song — and then know the next lyric well enough to arrive at the key.

“Tell me I’m not alone,” she said, questioning whether the connection really made sense.

A very Only Connect kind of puzzle

The moment captured exactly what makes Only Connect so notoriously challenging: clues that can appear completely unrelated until a very specific connection suddenly brings everything together.

In this case, the winning team had to move from measurements to farming machinery, then from the machinery to a song, before using its lyrics to identify the final answer.

Coren Mitchell may have considered the sequence impossible, but The Jukeboxers proved otherwise — turning one of the host’s most disliked questions into a successful piece of quiz-show deduction.
