A grid of apparently random letters was all that stood between one The 1% Club contestant and a £96,000 jackpot.

With just 30 seconds to work out a four-digit PIN, three finalists had to look beyond the clutter and find the numbers hidden inside the puzzle. Only one of them spotted the pattern in time.

The winning answer was 1489 — but the puzzle quickly divided viewers, with some arguing it was little more than a fast-paced word search.

Three finalists, £96,000 at stake

Hosted by Lee Mack, The 1% Club is built around logic, reasoning and common sense rather than traditional general-knowledge trivia. Contestants face increasingly difficult questions, with the final challenge designed to be solved by only a small percentage of the public within the 30-second time limit.

On this occasion, three players made it through to the final question, with all three choosing to risk the safer option for a chance at the full jackpot.

The question was:

“I keep forgetting my four-digit PIN number. I know each digit is higher than the previous digit but I need this diagram to remember it. What is my four-digit PIN number?”

What followed looked, at first, like a completely ordinary block of letters.

The contestants had only 30 seconds to work out what the grid was hiding.

The answer was hidden in four number words

The key was not to treat the grid as random letters.

Hidden within it were the words:

ONE
FOUR
EIGHT
NINE

Those words correspond to the four digits 1, 4, 8 and 9.

There was one more condition to follow: each digit in the PIN had to be higher than the digit before it.

That gives the final sequence:

1 – 4 – 8 – 9

So the PIN was 1489.

Dominic was the only finalist to get it right

Of the three remaining contestants, Dominic Jackson was the only one to lock in the correct answer.

His solution earned him the full £96,000 jackpot and his place in the 1% Club. His two fellow finalists were unable to produce the same result; one reportedly identified the correct digits but put them in the wrong order, while the other gave an incorrect answer.

Lee Mack then revealed how the number words were concealed within the grid, confirming why the answer had to be 1489.

The win demonstrated just how much difference a few seconds can make on the show. At home, viewers have the luxury of studying the puzzle without the same pressure. The contestants had to scan the grid, recognise the hidden words and then arrange the resulting digits correctly before the clock ran out.

Viewers couldn’t agree on how difficult it really was

Dominic’s victory prompted a mixed reaction from viewers.

Some praised him for staying calm and finding the four hidden number words under pressure. Others felt the final challenge was noticeably easier than some of the questions that had appeared earlier in the episode.

Several viewers described it as essentially a word-search puzzle, while others argued that the real difficulty was spotting the words quickly enough during the 30-second countdown.

That distinction is important. The answer itself is straightforward once the four words have been found. The challenge is identifying those words in a crowded grid while also remembering the condition that the digits must increase from one to the next.
