A $500,000 fund for Eric Dane’s daughters is being held back amid global mourning. Before the grief over Eric Dane’s death could subside, a GoFundMe campaign to support his two daughters was unexpectedly frozen for investigation. Hundreds of thousands of dollars had been donated — but could not be disbursed at this time. GoFundMe stated that they needed to verify the organizers and beneficiaries before transferring money. After the review process, Rebecca Gayheart was added as the official beneficiary. Amidst the pain of loss, this incident has further stirred public outrage — and raised the question: does kindness need more time to be protected?

Why the GoFundMe Set up for Eric Dane's Daughters Was Under Review

Following Eric Dane’s death, a GoFundMe was set up to support his daughters. However, that campaign came under fire and was under review, with donations temporarily held by the company’s payment processors.

Dane, who revealed in April 2025 that he had been diagnosed with ALS, died on Feb. 19. A GoFundMe was then set up by a man named Mike McGuiness, who said that he was a longtime friend of the late Grey’s Anatomy alum.

The GoFundMe is for Dane’s two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14, and their future needs as well as to help provide “stability during this incredibly difficult time.” The page noted that it was seeking a goal of $500,000 to support the girls.

GoFundMe said it routinely reviews fundraisers to verify organizers and confirm beneficiaries before releasing funds.

“Our Trust and Safety team is still looking into this GoFundMe and has reached out to the organizer to gather additional information,” a spokesperson told the San Francisco Chronicle. “All funds are being safely held by our payment processors during this review process.”

Rebecca Gayheart is Billie and Georgia’s mother. She and Dane separated in 2017. The actress later filed for divorce, but they remained legally married, and she dismissed her divorce petition in 2025. Gayheart acted as Dane’s primary caregiver during his battle with ALS. She took to her Instagram Stories on Feb. 21, with a link to the GoFundMe campaign for anyone who wished to donate and thanked everyone who had already.

On Feb. 22, GoFundMe said it completed its review, verified the information, and that Gayheart was added as the beneficiary.

As of this writing, donations have exceeded $350,000.
