Only Connect viewers hit back at ‘ridiculous’ questions after brutal episode
Only Connect has never promised an easy ride, but one recent episode left some viewers wondering whether the BBC quiz had finally pushed its famously fiendish questions too far.
After the programme aired on Monday, 10 February 2025, viewers took to social media to complain that several clues were so obscure they struggled to find any way into them. One even described the show as becoming “unwatchable”, while another said the questions were getting “ridiculous”.
The episode was the Series 20 semi-final between Four Opinions and Cat Cows, with a place in the third-place play-off at stake.
Clues that left viewers completely stumped
One of the questions featured the clues “musicians played” and “postal clerks raced to protect the mail”.
With so little apparent connection between the two statements, viewers were left trying to work out what they could possibly have in common.
The answer, revealed by host Victoria Coren Mitchell, was that both referred to events involving the Titanic.
Another question proved even more bewildering.
Contestants were given:
- “Swelling: on bones”
- “Finger: at the tip of the middle finger”
- “Mouse: throughout the body”
- “Pan: in the knees”
The connection depended on putting “little” before each of the first words.
Coren Mitchell explained how the clues worked, including the connection between “little mouse” and muscles through the Latin musculus, while the other clues referred to body parts. The unusual linguistic route left many viewers struggling to see where the question was going until the explanation was given.
The episode was officially billed as a semi-final, with the show noting that the questions were becoming increasingly challenging as the competition progressed.
Viewers: ‘Give us a chance!’
The reaction online was mixed, but a number of Only Connect fans felt the difficulty had gone beyond enjoyable puzzle-solving.
One viewer wrote on X that the questions were “just getting ridiculous”, acknowledging that the show’s appeal was being the toughest quiz on television but saying the questions were becoming frustrating enough that they might stop watching.
Another simply declared:
“Getting unwatchable now, give us a chance!”
A third complained that the questions were “ridiculous”, adding that they had not had a clue about any of them.
Another viewer described that week’s Connecting Wall as a “killer”.
These reactions reflected a familiar tension around Only Connect: the very difficulty that makes the programme distinctive can also leave viewers feeling completely shut out when a connection is too obscure.
Not everyone was defeated
There was, however, another side to the reaction.
Some viewers managed to solve at least one of the trickier clues and took considerable satisfaction from doing so. One fan joked about feeling “smug” after working out an answer, while another viewer had the opposite reaction altogether, saying the questions seemed easy that night.
The disagreement perhaps summed up Only Connect better than anything else.
For one viewer, a clue can seem impossible. For another, the answer can look obvious almost immediately.
The Series 20 semi-final itself aired on 10 February 2025, with Only Connect continuing the following week with the second semi-final between Tea Totallers and Crunchers.
