James, Earl of Wessex Reunites With Royal Family at Balmoral After Unusual Summer Job on King Charles’s Estate
James, Earl of Wessex has been spotted at Balmoral alongside his father, Prince Edward, as the 18-year-old enjoys time with the Royal Family before embarking on a significant new chapter away from home.
The young royal was photographed driving his father during the family’s summer gathering at King Charles’s Scottish residence. His appearance comes after an unusually hands-on summer in which James reportedly worked on his uncle King Charles’s Sandringham estate — and just weeks before he begins university.
James and Edward were joined in Scotland by a large contingent of the Royal Family, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, Princess Anne, Zara Tindall and Mike Tindall.
The gathering also comes against the backdrop of reports that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to return to Britain with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet after six years in the United States.
James takes the wheel at Balmoral

James was seen behind the wheel as he arrived with Prince Edward at Balmoral.
With temperatures in the area hovering around 15C, both father and son dressed for the cooler Scottish weather. James wore a blue jumper beneath a gilet, while Edward opted for a green jumper over a collared shirt and tie.
Their appearance came as several other members of the family were seen arriving at the estate for the traditional summer gathering.
The Prince and Princess of Wales were among those present, along with Princess Anne and Zara and Mike Tindall. Balmoral has traditionally served as the Royal Family’s summer retreat, with relatives joining the monarch in the Scottish Highlands during August.
A royal reunion ahead of Harry’s reported return

This year’s family gathering has attracted particular attention because of reports surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Harry and Meghan are expected to return to the UK with their children by the end of August, six years after establishing their life in the United States.
King Charles is understood to welcome the prospect of having his younger son and grandchildren closer to him. However, there have been suggestions that Harry should not necessarily expect the same response from every member of the family.
Speaking on A Right Royal Podcast, HELLO!’s royal editor Emily Nash pointed to the lack of reaction from William and Kate and suggested the couple were unlikely to be delighted by the development.
The reported Sussex return does not change Harry and Meghan’s position within the monarchy. They are expected to remain non-working royals.
James prepares to leave home for university

For James, however, the Balmoral gathering comes at an important personal moment.
After successfully completing his A-levels, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the Earl of Wessex will attend the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester, where he will study Rural Land & Property Management.
The palace confirmed that James achieved the grades he required and will head directly to university rather than taking a gap year.
The decision makes him the first member of the British Royal Family to study at the Royal Agricultural University, although Captain Mark Phillips, Princess Anne’s first husband, previously attended the institution.
The university is based in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, approximately nine miles from Princess Anne’s Gatcombe Park home.
James is the younger child of Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh. His older sister, Lady Louise Windsor, has been studying English at the University of St Andrews.
James’s surprising summer job at Sandringham

Before swapping family life for university, James has reportedly spent part of his summer gaining some decidedly practical experience.
The teenager worked at King Charles’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk, where reports said his presence surprised other workers.
Rather than simply spending his summer at the royal property, James was reportedly getting involved with work on the estate’s organic farm and was seen driving tractors — reportedly prompting some employees to do a “double take” when they realised the young man working alongside them was the King’s nephew.
The experience appears particularly relevant given his decision to study Rural Land & Property Management, a course connected to the management of land and rural estates.
King Charles has long championed environmental issues and organic farming. His interest has extended to his estates, including Sandringham and Highgrove.
A major transition for the 18-year-old royal
James has generally maintained a considerably lower public profile than many of his royal relatives.
Although he and his sister are entitled to use prince and princess titles as grandchildren of the late Queen Elizabeth II, their parents chose not to have them formally use those styles. James instead uses the title Earl of Wessex.
His forthcoming move to university will therefore mark another step towards establishing a life outside the traditional framework of full-time royal duties.
For now, however, James is back among his family at Balmoral — taking the wheel alongside his father after a working summer at Sandringham and before leaving home for a very different kind of royal milestone.
