Macron’s Greeting Went A Little Too Far… French President Emmanuel Macron caught attention with a surprisingly tactile gesture toward Queen Camilla during the Bayeux Tapestry unveiling. One hand on her back. One very public moment. And suddenly, royal protocol looked a little different…

Macron’s Warm Greeting to Queen Camilla Steals Attention at Bayeux Tapestry Unveiling

Emmanuel Macron's Gallic charm appeared to get the better of him on Wednesday, as the French President showcased his affection for Queen Camilla with a tactile greeting

Emmanuel Macron appeared to momentarily forget the formality of a royal engagement when he greeted Queen Camilla with a notably warm and tactile gesture during the unveiling of the Bayeux Tapestry in London.

The French president was seen placing a hand on Camilla’s back as he and his wife, Brigitte Macron, arrived at the British Museum alongside King Charles and the Queen for the historic event.

The moment offered a relaxed glimpse of the relationship between the French president and the British royal couple, while the occasion itself marked a major milestone in cultural ties between Britain and France.

A warm welcome for Queen Camilla

Mr Macron offered her a friendly and tactile greeting by lightly touching her back – before slowly moving behind her

Footage from the arrival showed Macron, 48, gently placing his hand on Camilla’s back before moving behind her as she waved enthusiastically to the waiting crowds.

Camilla, 79, appeared elegant in a white Anna Valentine dress, accessorized with a Dior bag and Chanel suede satin pumps. Brigitte Macron, 73, also chose an all-white ensemble, wearing a midi dress with matching heels.

Macron and Brigitte were then seen holding hands as they followed Charles, 77, and Camilla into the museum.

The informal greeting came during a visit centered on one of the most significant cultural exchanges between the two nations in decades: the temporary loan of the Bayeux Tapestry to Britain.

A nearly 1,000-year-old masterpiece arrives in Britain

King Charles and Camilla accompanied Macron and his wife, Brigitte, for the historic unveiling of the Bayeux Tapestry at London's British Museum yesterday

Measuring 70 metres in length, the Bayeux Tapestry is being loaned by France to Britain for the first time in its nearly 1,000-year history.

King Charles described its arrival as a “precious symbol of trust” between the two countries, particularly at a time when international trust is under pressure.

The King reflected on the tapestry’s extraordinary history, noting that its story encompasses ambition, uncertainty, oaths, journeys, ships, councils, kings, comets and consequences.

He also highlighted the shared heritage represented by the work.

Although the tapestry tells the story of the Norman Conquest, Charles pointed out that it was commissioned in Normandy and was most likely embroidered in Canterbury by English craftspeople.

The Queen appeared effortlessly elegant in an Anna Valentine white dress while Mrs Macron opted for an all-white midi dress

He suggested that the artwork may therefore have helped bring the two peoples together from the moment it was created.

Charles also drew a connection between the historic conflict depicted in the tapestry and the modern relationship between Britain and France, saying the ancient artwork now stands as a symbol of trust between the nations.

Speaking in both English and French, the King emphasized that Britain and France had defended their shared values during difficult periods and continued to do so around the world.

He concluded by describing the tapestry, along with treasures that will travel in the opposite direction, as symbols of a shared past and a shared future between the two countries.

Charles and Macron explore the historic embroidery

Macron's fond display of affection towards Camilla showcased the strength of Anglo-French relations, and indicated the significance of the tapestry's arrival in the UK following years of negotiations

The King and Macron travelled together to the British Museum in the State Bentley, while Camilla and Brigitte followed in another vehicle.

They were welcomed by Andy Burnham and his wife, Marie-France van Heel, before being joined by Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, France’s culture minister and Sir Thomas Drew, Britain’s ambassador to France.

Burnham and Macron appeared particularly relaxed as they spoke, occasionally placing an arm around one another. Meanwhile, van Heel spoke French with Brigitte Macron.

Inside the Salisbury Exhibition Gallery, museum director Dr Nicholas Cullinan, chairman George Osborne and curators Michael Lewis and Sue Brunning guided the group through the exhibition.

The visitors walked along the full length of the embroidery, pausing at some of its most famous scenes depicting the events leading up to the Norman Conquest and the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

One of the scenes depicts Harold’s coronation before his death at Hastings, traditionally interpreted as showing an arrow striking him in the eye.

Charles stopped at the well-known image and asked where Harold was depicted, observing that the arrow appeared particularly faint.

The King also took an interest in the extraordinary logistics involved in transporting the ancient textile from France to Britain.

An eight-year wait for a historic loan

The tapestry took 18 hours to cross the Channel on its journey to Britain and was transported under stringent precautions because of its age and delicate condition.

Charles joked to Macron that the priceless artwork was “very well insured.”

George Osborne thanked the French president for helping make the loan possible, telling him how much the museum appreciated his efforts.

Macron acknowledged that the process had taken several years, saying: “It took a few years to deliver, but we got there.”

In a speech lasting more than ten minutes, delivered in both English and French, Macron recalled that he had first discussed bringing the Bayeux Tapestry to Britain during a visit to Sandhurst in 2018.

He said the project had required patience, pointing out that an artwork almost 1,000 years old could not simply be moved without careful consideration.

Macron also noted that the first British request for the tapestry dated back to 1931, joking that the eight-year process since his own discussions began could therefore be considered something of a speed record.

Macron celebrates the bond between Britain and France

The French president used the occasion to highlight the close relationship between the two nations, referencing the “entente cordiale” that Charles had mentioned during his State Dinner at Windsor Castle the previous year.

He also pointed to the tapestry’s likely English origins, while adding a light-hearted observation about British influence in France.

Macron joked that even the gardens of the Élysée Palace were designed in an English style — although, he quipped, that detail would remain between them.

His remarks also touched on Britain’s role in NATO and the G7, as well as Andy Burnham’s first overseas visit as Prime Minister to Ukraine.

“That mattered,” Macron said.

He ultimately presented the Bayeux Tapestry as another symbol of the enduring alliance between Britain and France, describing the relationship as one that remains increasingly close and united.

He ended his speech with a simple declaration: “Long live culture.”
