Prince William Reportedly Furious as Earl Spencer Escalates Row With King Charles

Prince William is reportedly feeling a deep sense of frustration as the dispute between his uncle, Earl Charles Spencer, and King Charles continues to intensify.

According to Charlotte Griffiths, editor at large for the Mail on Sunday, William is said to be experiencing what has been described as “multigenerational fury” following Spencer’s latest remarks about the King.

The comments come after Spencer stood firmly by a series of claims about Charles in his new memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, and accused the King of “gaslighting” him over the events he recalled following Princess Diana’s death in 1997.

Earl Spencer Accuses King Charles of “Gaslighting” Him

One of the most controversial passages in Spencer’s memoir concerns a conversation he says he had with Charles shortly after Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris.

Spencer claims the then Prince of Wales told him, “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough.”

Buckingham Palace later issued a statement appearing to challenge Spencer’s recollection without directly addressing the claim. The Palace said that “the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise.”

Spencer has rejected that suggestion and has continued to stand by his account.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, he accused the King of “gaslighting” him, saying he found the Palace response “astonishingly provocative and below the belt” because, in his view, it implied that he had been untruthful without directly denying what he said.

He also compared the wording to the late Queen Elizabeth II’s well-known statement that “recollections may vary,” describing that response as a more elegant formulation but arguing that it was inappropriate in these circumstances.

William Reportedly Feels the Weight of the Royal Family’s Past

The latest controversy prompted GB News presenter Ben Leo to discuss reports surrounding William’s reaction.

Charlotte Griffiths said there was substance behind descriptions of the Prince of Wales as experiencing “multigenerational fury.”

“It’s really powerful stuff saying he feels this fury and I think that’s true,” she said.

According to Griffiths, William is not simply frustrated by Spencer’s latest intervention but is also reportedly weary of the repeated crises surrounding the Royal Family.

“From what I’m hearing, this is the latest in a string of disasters that has beset the Royal Family that William feels not only furious, but actually quite weary that he has to inherit all this,” she explained.

For Griffiths, the word “multigenerational” is particularly significant because much of the conflict now surrounding the family has its roots in events and tensions dating back generations.

She suggested that William wants to represent a more modern version of the monarchy rather than remain defined by disputes inherited from previous generations.

A More Low-Key Family Life

Griffiths pointed to William’s everyday approach as an example of the more modern image she believes he is trying to establish.

She referenced his use of an e-bike to travel around Windsor and said he has “got on with the job” in a way she also associated with Queen Camilla.

Away from royal duties, William has also focused on building what Griffiths described as a “sane and normal family” life with Princess Catherine.

The couple are known for taking their children to school without making a major spectacle of it, while also joining other parents in sports activities at their children’s schools.

According to Griffiths, that relatively private and low-key lifestyle makes the continuing royal drama particularly frustrating for William.

“They have a relatively lowkey lifestyle and so he’s so frustrated that this drama follows him wherever he goes,” she said.

She added that, despite that frustration, William has little choice but to endure the situation because of the position he is expected to inherit.

“He can’t change it in any way, he just has to put up and shut up,” Griffiths said.

As Earl Spencer continues to defend his account of events surrounding Diana and his relationship with King Charles, the dispute has added another difficult chapter to a family history that William is reportedly increasingly weary of carrying into the future.
