Celtic Thunder sent audiences into a frenzy with their powerful performance of the 16th-century Latin Christmas carol ‘Gaudete’, turning a centuries-old sacred song into a joyful, high-energy highlight. With its fast pace and uplifting melody, the carol has become one of the most recognizable and celebrated Christmas pieces the group has ever performed.

The performance features Celtic Thunder’s signature big sound, delivered by the group’s seven male soloists — Ryan, Keith, Colm, George, Neil, Emmett, and Emmet whose voices blend seamlessly in both solo and ensemble moments. Their version of Gaudete stands out for its rhythmic drive and infectious sense of celebration, drawing cheers and instant reactions from the crowd.
The song also appears on Holiday Symphony, Celtic Thunder’s festive album designed to capture the full spirit of the season. Recorded with a 90-piece orchestra, the album includes 15 tracks that span classic Christmas carols from around the world. Alongside Gaudete, the collection features beloved standards such as Away in a Manger, O Holy Night, and Come All Ye Faithful, as well as more modern favorites like Mary’s Boy Child and Fairytale of New York. The album builds from calm, reflective moments to large, fast-paced ensemble numbers, finishing with a lively Christmas medley that brings the holiday cheer to a thrilling close.

Gaudete itself has a long and rich history. Written in the 16th century and published in 1582 in the Finnish and Swedish song collection Piae Cantiones, the carol was originally printed without music. The melody most likely comes from the late medieval era, with harmonies added later in the 15th century. Sung entirely in Latin and traditionally performed without instruments, it has remained a favorite of choirs around the world.

The song reached modern mainstream audiences in 1973, when British folk rock band Steeleye Span recorded an unaccompanied version that climbed to number 14 on the UK singles chart. Since then, leading vocal groups such as The King’s Singers, Tenebrae, and The Gesualdo Six have released their own acclaimed recordings.

By bringing Gaudete into their holiday performances, Celtic Thunder bridge the past and present, honoring the song’s sacred roots while delivering it with fresh energy and scale. The result is a festive moment that feels both timeless and thrilling and one that continues to light up audiences wherever it is performed.
