“Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen
Originally released on his 1984 album Various Positions, Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” has become one of the most covered songs of all time. Artists like Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, Susan Boyle, Jennifer Hudson, Pentatonix, Bob Dylan, and Willie Nelson have all put their own spin on the beloved classic.
The song saw a resurgence in 2001 when Wainwright’s version was featured on the Shrek soundtrack. When Cohen passed away in 2016, his original version climbed to number 59 on the Billboard US Hot 100.
According to American Songwriter, Cohen wrote nearly 80 verses before finalizing the lyrics. As for his thoughts on the countless covers of his masterpiece? “I’m very happy that it’s being sung,” he told The Guardian in 2012.
