“‘FIFTY-THREE YEARS IN THE MAKING… AND A 15-YEAR-OLD JUST OWNED THE MOMENT OF THE NIGHT.’” Before Alicia Keys sang a single note at the Knicks’ historic championship parade, she made an unexpected decision to hand the spotlight to her son, Egypt.

Before Alicia Keys sang a single note, she stepped back.

Her son Egypt, 15, sat down at the piano. He played the opening bars of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” before Alicia transitioned into “Empire State of Mind,” the song that has become New York’s modern anthem — as hundreds of thousands of people packed lower Broadway, the same Canyon of Heroes that had waited 53 years for this particular parade. Then she took the bench herself and finished what they had started together, as Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani danced behind her.

There were technical difficulties. The sound cut out twice before she reached the stage. Nobody cared.

“We’ve been waiting over 50 years for this moment and we never going to stop,” she told the crowd. They were already singing.

The Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in five games on June 13, ending the longest active championship drought in the NBA — the franchise’s first title since 1973, its first ticker-tape parade ever. The 2026 Finals averaged more than 20 million viewers, the league’s most-watched postseason in 28 years.

Why “Empire State of Mind”

There was never any other song.

When the Knicks won Game 5 in San Antonio, fans poured into the streets of New York and sang it without being asked. It has been the city’s unofficial anthem since Jay-Z and Alicia Keys released it in 2009 — the year a generation of Knicks fans was still young enough to believe a championship was coming soon. The lyrics reference the Knicks directly. For 17 years, that line was a joke and a wound at the same time.

On Thursday, it was neither.

Why Egypt Opened It

Alicia Keys was born in Hell’s Kitchen. She learned the piano at six. She has spent her entire career as the musical embodiment of what New York believes about itself — that it produces something that doesn’t exist anywhere else.

Egypt Daoud Dean was born in New York City in 2010. At eleven, he performed alone in front of 17,000 people at one of his mother’s concerts in Mannheim, Germany. She wrote afterward that she had been nervous, and that she had nothing to worry about.

On Thursday, she handed him the song.

“Me and my son Egypt, we thought that we would do it like this,” she told the crowd. It was a decision made in advance. She could have opened with the anthem herself. Instead, she arranged for a 15-year-old from New York to play the first notes of New York’s song at New York’s loudest day in half a century.

Egypt was born in 2010.

The Knicks were already deep into their championship drought.

He was born the year the wait continued.

He played the song the year it ended.

Why the Sound System Failing Made It Better

The audio cut out before Keys reached the stage. “Empire State of Mind” began, stopped, began again. The crowd didn’t disperse. They got louder.

New York’s most iconic moments are almost never clean. The city does not produce polished ceremonies; it produces real ones. When Keys finally walked out — in a leather jacket studded with the Knicks logo — the chaos had already done the work. The crowd was not waiting for a performance. They were already inside one.

What Comes Next

“Empire State of Mind” will almost certainly re-enter streaming charts this week — it has done so before during New York moments, and Thursday gave it a broader stage than it has had in years.

For Egypt, Thursday was not a debut. But it was his largest stage, and his most symbolic one. He is fifteen. His mother’s career began at fifteen. Whether he pursues music professionally remains his to decide. What is no longer in question is that he looked comfortable on one of the biggest stages New York could offer.

For Alicia Keys, her new documentary — which premiered at Tribeca the night the Knicks won, at whose afterparty she first performed this song — now has an ending no one could have scripted.

The Knicks have already sold out the 2026–27 season. Thursday was an end and a beginning simultaneously — which is, as it happens, what “Empire State of Mind” has always been about.
