Based on the bestselling novel that left readers sleeping with the lights on, Netflix’s latest psychological thriller is already sending waves of anticipation through horror fans. Starring Robert De Niro, the film pulls viewers into a deeply unsettling mystery where every clue uncovers something darker, every whisper hides a secret, and every revelation brings a new nightmare. Fans of The Black Phone, Se7en, and Prisoners are already predicting a relentlessly tense experience packed with psychological dread, haunting twists, and moments that refuse to leave your mind. But those who read the novel have one warning for everyone else… You may think you know where this story is going. You don’t.

“If you leave a door half open, soon you’ll hear the whispers spoken. If your window’s left unlatched, you’ll hear him tapping at the glass. If you’re lonely, sad, and blue, the Whisper Man will come for you.”

This haunting playground rhyme lies at the heart of The Whisper Man, Netflix’s gripping new psychological thriller based on Alex North’s acclaimed bestselling novel. Starring an impressive cast led by Oscar winner Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan, and Adam Scott, the film blends edge-of-your-seat suspense with a poignant father-son story that explores grief, legacy, and the darkness lurking in quiet suburbs.

A Story That Refuses to Stay Buried

After the tragic death of his wife, crime writer Tom Kennedy (Adam Scott) relocates with his young son Jake to a seemingly peaceful new town, hoping for a fresh start. But the community harbors a horrifying secret. Two decades earlier, a serial killer known as “The Whisper Man” abducted and murdered five young boys, luring them from their homes at night with eerie whispers. The killer was caught and imprisoned—thanks in large part to retired detective Peter Willis (De Niro), Tom’s estranged father.

When children begin vanishing again shortly after the Kennedys arrive, the past erupts into the present. As Jake becomes the latest target, Tom must swallow his pride and team up with his father to confront a nightmare that may not be over. What follows is a tense investigation filled with shocking twists, as the duo races to understand how the Whisper Man’s influence persists behind bars—or if something even more sinister is at play.

The film’s chilling teaser poster captures one of the book’s most unsettling moments: the Whisper Man reaching through a mail slot, extending a hand toward a frightened child (played by Acston Luca Porto). Author Alex North praised the scene’s translation to screen. “It’s an inherently frightening idea, the idea that anybody could be reaching out to your child or talking secretly to them,” he told Tudum. “It works really, really well in the film. I was pleased it was there.”

Directed by James Ashcroft (The Rule of Jenny Pen, Coming Home in the Dark) and written by Ben Jacoby (The First Omen) and Chase Palmer (It), The Whisper Man marks Netflix’s sixth collaboration with the Russo brothers’ production company AGBO.

“AGBO is excited to be embarking on our sixth film with our incredible partners at Netflix,” said AGBO chief creative officer Angela Russo-Otstot. “The Whisper Man is a gripping thriller, but at its core [it] is a poignant and complex story of fathers and sons. We are grateful to have one of the finest actors of his generation, Robert De Niro, anchoring that story and with the remarkable James Ashcroft directing.”
