Apple TV+ has been on fire this year. I’ve officially reached a state of total fandom, constantly vibrating with anticipation for the next episode of my new favourite show, Widow’s Bay. But beyond that? My watchlist is a rotating carousel of greatness: Margo’s Got Money Troubles has cemented my theory that Elle Fanning can do no wrong; Severance remains the gold standard for epic television; and Shrinking makes me want to crawl inside the screen and move in with the characters. My WhatsApp groups are basically just a dedicated For All Mankind fan club, and I’m still holding out hope for a Bad Sisters revival (bring them back, Apple!).

But even with my schedule packed this tight, I’ve noticed a massive gap in the cultural conversation. We are all – collectively, as a dropping-the-ball-on-great-TV whole – sleeping on Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed.

Watch the trailer for Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed below:

I know, I know; I say this so often, but if you aren’t watching this one, you are missing out. And not just on a great series; you are missing out on the most frantic, bingeworthy and deeply unsettling experience on streaming right now.

With 10 episodes in total (and just enough time to catch up before the final two land if you put the hours in) it currently sits at a staggering 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. And yet, it remains the show everyone seems to be ignoring. So, what’s it all about?

Well, at its heart, it’s a high-stakes, darkly comedic thriller. We follow Paula (Tatiana Maslany), a divorced, isolated single mother whose life spirals into pure neurosis after a webcam model named Trevor (Brandon Flynn) is seemingly kidnapped while she’s talking to him online.

When the police dismiss the incident as a nuisance scam and Trevor starts calling her, sobbing, begging for $50,000 to save his life, Paula finds herself trapped in a nightmare. Soon, the calls follow her to work, the threats extend to her family and the lines between victim and unhinged protagonist begin to blur.

Am I Team Paula, or is she the villain of her own story?

So far, so good. But even better is the fact that Paula is everything I want in a lead character and more; she is an imperfect hot mess – warm and funny while being vengeful and a little disorienting, and entirely off her rocker.

No wonder, of course. Dealing with a messy post-divorce life where her ex-husband Karl (a perfectly prickly Jake Johnson) is constantly weaponising their daughter Hazel (Nola Wallace) against her, Paula has been all but driven to become the definition of ‘morally grey’. Watching her navigate workplace misogyny while teetering on the edge of her next self-inflicted disaster makes you ask yourself the ultimate question: am I Team Paula, or is she the villain of her own story?

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed' Is Indeed a Joy: TV Review

The blurred lines don’t end there, either, as this show is a masterclass in genre ambiguity, effortlessly sliding between biting comedy and an erotic thriller. It’s fast-paced, it’s edgy, and it has more hairpin turns than I thought humanly possible for one series. (Keep an eye out for the children’s pizza party that is, without hyperbole, the most chillingly absurd thing I have seen on television).

It is unpredictable, it is unhinged, and it is my new personality

The supporting cast is just as stellar, featuring the brilliant Dolly de Leon and Jon Michael Hill as the detectives on the case, and a mysterious turn from the legendary Murray Bartlett. Every single episode, too, has ended on a twist that left me physically gasping and diving into a hive of frantic fan theories on Reddit.

But if you don’t want to take my word for it, look to the master himself: Stephen King recently tweeted his stamp of approval.

When the guy who invented modern horror says a show is terrifying, you’d better believe it’s bloody terrifying.

In a nutshell, all I really need to tell you is this: it is unpredictable, it is unhinged, and it is my new personality. Stop what you’re doing and start Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. Trust me, you’ll thank me later… even if it does leave you flinching every single time you hear the default Apple ringtone.

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is streaming via Apple TV+.
