The first trailer has been released for Out There, an English-language Welsh-created science-fiction comedy drama starring Michael Sheen, ahead of its world premiere later this week.
Set in the 1990s in a sleepy seaside town in Wales, the plot follows a teenaged astrology enthusiast who thinks she has spotted a UFO, and a big conspiracy unfolds. Are the government really hiding anything, or are the people just desperate for more excitement in their lives?
Alongside Sheen — who plays a hippie shop owner with a loose understanding of what makes a good bargain (“You buy one, you get one”) — the film’s cast includes Mammoth‘s Nerys Amber Stocks, Alien: Earth‘s Tom Moya, Doctor Who‘s Aneurin Barnard, Game of Thrones‘ Iwan Rheon, and Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace‘s Alice Lowe.
The film will be premiering this Friday during the Edinburgh International Film Festival, as part of the In Competition strand.
The full EIFF synopsis reads: “Still grieving the disappearance of her scientist father, amateur teenaged astronomer Maz (Stocks) is convinced she has spotted something suspicious hovering above her sleepy Welsh hometown.
“Recruiting the support of her best mate Little Elis (Moya), UFO-obsessed conspiracy theorist Bryn (Barnard) and local psychic Shifty Gruff (Sheen), Maz and her gang of misfits set out to uncover the truth, one that is far more complex than they might have expected.

“Breathlessly paced, wittily evoking its 1999 setting via superb music choices, costumes and production design, this charming Welsh debut from director Simon Ryninks is poignant, funny and entirely unpredictable.”
Writer and director Simon Ryninks previously told the BBC that he had “always wanted to set a film on the Ceredigion coast as it’s my favourite place in the world”, but most of the production took place in and around Bridgend, Nelson and Porthcawl for practical reasons.
Ryninks did manage to film some of it in Ceredigion, stating “that was when the film really began to feel like the one I’d carried in my head for seven years”.
We don’t have a wider release date for Out There yet, but if you want to check out more modern Welsh cinema (in English), the film Madfabulous — starring It’s a Sin‘s Callum Scott Howells — is available now on home platforms and disc.
