Bradley Cooper’s Powerful True-Story War Drama ‘American Sniper’ Is Now Streaming on Netflix UK

A deeply personal war drama based on the life of US Navy SEAL Chris Kyle has found a new home on Netflix UK, giving viewers another chance to revisit one of Bradley Cooper’s most acclaimed performances.
Released in 2014, American Sniper traces Kyle’s journey from a Texas ranch hand and rodeo cowboy to an elite military marksman whose four deployments to Iraq made him one of the most lethal snipers in American military history.
Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film is based on Kyle’s 2012 memoir of the same name.
From Texas to Four Tours in Iraq

Kyle joined the US Navy and became a member of the SEALs before serving four tours in Iraq between 2003 and 2009.
During his military career, he was credited by the Pentagon with 160 confirmed kills.
While American Sniper depicts the danger and violence Kyle encountered during his deployments, much of its emotional weight comes from the effect his military service had on his life away from the battlefield.
Sienna Miller stars as Kyle’s wife, Taya, with the film exploring the increasing distance between the couple as Kyle repeatedly leaves his family and returns to Iraq.
The real Chris and Taya Kyle had two children, and each deployment meant another separation as Kyle returned to some of the conflict’s most dangerous areas.
Chris Kyle’s Life After the Navy Ended in Tragedy

Kyle left the Navy in 2009 and later devoted considerable time to helping fellow veterans.
His life ended tragically at the age of 38.
Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield took fellow veteran Eddie Ray Routh to a shooting range in Texas, with Kyle hoping to help him. Routh fatally shot both men.
That real-life ending adds another painful dimension to a film already concerned with what military service can mean for those who return home.
‘American Sniper’ Divided Critics but Connected With Audiences
The film generated considerable debate following its release, particularly over its portrayal of Kyle and the Iraq War.
It currently holds a 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while audience responses have frequently praised Cooper’s performance and the film’s emotional impact.
One Rotten Tomatoes viewer highlighted its “amazing emotion,” along with its portrayal of PTSD, the consequences of war and its action sequences.
Another praised Cooper’s performance and Eastwood’s direction, writing: “A great movie on Chris Kyle’s life. Superb performance by Bradley Cooper. Great directing from Clint Eastwood. Also, great acting by entire cast.”
A third described the movie as difficult to watch but worthwhile, calling it “a beautiful film.”
Bradley Cooper Earned an Oscar Nomination
Cooper’s transformation into Kyle received significant awards recognition.
He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor, while American Sniper earned six Oscar nominations in total.
The film ultimately won the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing.
More than a decade after its original release, the combination of battlefield action and a troubled homecoming continues to make American Sniper a challenging and intensely personal entry in the war-film genre.
American Sniper is currently available to stream on Netflix in the UK.
